INDIANA, Pa. – IUP field hockey kept the undefeated and second-ranked Shippensburg Raiders scoreless through 70 minutes of play, but the Crimson Hawks gave up a goal less than five minutes into overtime as they watched their upset bid fall short by a score of 1-0 at Miller Stadium on Wednesday.
The loss dropped the Crimson Hawks to 1-2 on the season. It was their second straight overtime game, defeating Seton Hill 2-1 on Monday. Shippensburg improved to 5-0.
The Raiders got off 12 shots, including eight in the second half. IUP goalie
Alyssa Lerda (Wexford, Pa./Pine-Richland) came up big in the cage, turning away the Raiders with four saves on the day. Shippensburg turned up the heat late in regulation, with three penalty corners and five shots in the last 8:32 of play. The IUP defense turned away the Raiders each time, including a Lerda save with 24 seconds left.
IUP's best scoring chance in the second half came with just under 16 minutes left to play, but back-to-back shots by senior Oliva Young and sophomore
Matti Reightler (Bethlehem, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic) both missed to keep the Crimson Hawks off the board.
Both losses this year for the Crimson Hawks have been 1-0, as they also lost their season-opener to then-third-ranked West Chester on the road by that score.
They'll continue their three-game home stand this weekend with games against Bloomsburg on Saturday and Bellarmine on Sunday, both with 1 p.m. starts.
