CHEYNEY, Pa. – The ninth-ranked Crimson Hawks outgained Cheyney 458-137 and forced four turnovers as IUP shutout the Wolves 55-0 in Saturday afternoon cross-divisional football action at O'Shields-Stevenson Stadium.
The Crimson Hawks' special teams scored on a blocked field goal return while the offense was balanced, finishing with 239 rushing yards and 219 passing yards in the win. It was IUP's 11th shutout since 2010 and eighth in its last 49 games since the beginning of the 2012 season.
IUP scored in each quarter, including four touchdowns in the second quarter, breaking the game wide open before halftime as the Crimson Hawks improved to 2-0 on the season. Cheyney fell to 1-2.
Redshirt sophomore quarterback
Lenny Williams, Jr. (McKees Rocks, Pa./Sto-Rox) threw three touchdowns to three different receivers, with
Chris Wuestner (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle) catching eight passes for 169 yards and one of those scores. Junior
Walt Pegues (Philadelphia, Pa. /Central) caught two for 31 yards, including a 19-yard catch-and-run for a score, extending his streak to 25 straight games with a reception.
Seven different players gained yards on the ground for IUP, with freshman
Samir Bullock (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) leading the way with 56 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries. Sophomore Aiden Schaffer added 42 yards, junior
Luigi Lista-Brinza (McKees Rocks, Pa. /Central Catholic) and freshman
Malik Anderson (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) each had 33, and Williams ran for 32 yards.
Junior running back
Chris Temple (Malvern, Pa. /Great Valley) got the call often near the goal line, scoring three touchdowns and rushing for 29 yards on eight carries in limited action.
Williams found redshirt freshman
JoJo Gause (Rochester, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) for a 14-yard score to open the scoring in the first quarter. Wuestner caught his touchdown early in the second, with Temple and Pegues adding scores to make it 27-0 with more than eight minutes to go before halftime. Temple scored his second touchdown four 4:48 to go before the break to give IUP a 34-0 lead.
Temple scored his third touchdown midway through the third and Bullock added his touchdown less than four minutes later. IUP capped the scoring with a 95-yard blocked field goal return by junior
Eric Doe (Darby, Pa. /Academy Prep), the fifth longest play in school history. Redshirt freshman
Isaiah Stokes (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) blocked the kick attempt at the IUP 32-yard line, keeping Cheyney off the board, before Doe picked it up and raced untouched for the score.
The IUP defense limited Cheyney to just 49 rushing yards and 10 first downs on the day. The Wolves went 9-of-27 through the air, with IUP picking off two passes and forcing three fumbles, recovering two.
The Wolves' best chance to negate the shutout came in the beginning of the fourth quarter, moving the ball down to the IUP 11-yard line, but three straight sacks by the Crimson Hawks plus a pair of offensive penalties pushed Cheyney back to its 49-yard line, forcing a punt.
Redshirt sophomore safety
Anthony Davis (Monroeville, Pa./Gateway) had seven tackles, two tackles-for-loss, a sack and a pass breakup to lead the charge. True freshman end
Dondrea Tillman (Sterling, Va./Potomac Falls) saw his first career action, finishing with seven stops, including two behind the line of scrimmage, and a sack.
Junior
Jay Watkins (Chester, Pa. /Hyde School) and redshirt senior
Ackeno Robertson (Philadelphia, Pa. /Parkway Northwest) each picked off passes, while redshirt freshman
Colin McAllister (Boothwyn, Pa./Chichester) and junior
Takhi Turner (Harrisburg, Pa./Susquehanna Twp.) both recovered fumbles.
The Crimson Hawks emptied their bench in the big win, with 30 different players posting a defensive statistic on the day.
It's the fourth straight shutout by IUP in its series with Cheyney, as the Crimson Hawks have outscored the Wolves 222-0 since head coach
Curt Cignetti arrived in 2011.
The game was also the 500th IUP football broadcast for Jack Benedict, the "Voice of IUP Sports." Starting in 1969, Benedict has called 360 IUP wins, has seen the program secure 16 NCAA playoff appearances, including national title games in 1990 and 1993, and has seen some of the greatest athletes in IUP history.
The Crimson Hawks remain on the road next week, heading to Edinboro to face the surprising 3-0 Fighting Scots. The Saturday kickoff is at 12 p.m.
