YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The IUP track & field teams opened its 2017-18 indoor season on Friday by tallying eight conference and two NCAA provisional marks at the YSU Icebreaker at Youngstown State's Watson and Tressel Training Site.

Horton won the pole vault by clearing a height of 4.92 meters (16-01.75), his second career win at a YSU-hosted meet. He cleared the NCAA provisional mark of 4.72 meters. Noll won the men's 800 meters with a time of 1:55.76, one of three additional Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) qualifying marks on the day.
Freshman
Daniel Jackson (Akron, Ohio/Archbishop Hoban) began his collegiate career by finishing second in the long jump with a leap of 6.76 meters (22-02.25).
Christian Jones (Uniontown, Pa./Laurel Highlands) cleared 2.00 meters (6-06.75) in the high jump, joining Noll and Jackson with conference qualifying outings.
Another highlight from Friday on the men's side came from
Dylan Ruefle (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton), who finished second in the 1000 meters with a time of 2:39.04.
For the women, senior
Heather Sternby (Meadville, Pa./Meadville) ran an NCAA provisional time in the 400 meters with a time of 57.18, which was good for third place at the meet. She also ran a PSAC qualifying time in the 200 meters with a ninth place time of 25.75.
Four more IUP women combined for five PSAC qualifying marks, including Ravel Russell in the 60 meters (7.77) and 200 meters (25.99).
Jada Wilson (King of Prussia, Pa./Upper Merion) ran a 59.19 in the 400 meters,
Jessica Jones (South Park, PA/South Park) finished with a time of 2:23.56 in the 800 meters, and Elizabeth Coppella cleared 3.40 meters in the pole vault.
Up next
This was the only meet for the Crimson Hawks in December. Both men's and women's teams are back in action Jan. 26-27 at the Penn State Nationals.
