INDIANA, Pa. – Junior
Kalista Gioglio (Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg) scored with less than five minutes remaining, lifting IUP field hockey to a 2-1 upset win over seventh-ranked Kutztown on Saturday evening at George P. Miller Stadium.
It was Gioglio's first goal of the year, as she found the upper left corner of the cage off a pass from senior
Madelyn Mullen (Chester Springs, Pa./Owen J. Roberts). The score came with 65:20 on the clock, giving Kutztown (4-2) very time left to respond.
The Golden Bears did have chances in the final, fleeting moments, with IUP senior goalie Allyssa Lerda turning away shots in the 67th and 69th minutes to keep IUP the Crimson Hawks in the lead.
But the biggest save by Lerda came with less than two minutes on the block, stopping a Kutztown penalty stroke by Morgan Aldinger, her sixth save of the night.
The Crimson Hawks improve to 3-3 overall with the win, their third in the last four games. IUP has outscored its opponents 11-6 over that span.
Kutztown scored the game's first goal on a fast break less than 12 minutes into the contest. Without any other first half scores, the Crimson Hawks tied things up with a goal by
Selena West (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) on an assist by
Kimberly Kelly (Coatesville, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) in the 49th minute.
