PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The IUP men's and women's cross country teams squared off against Division I talent on Saturday as the ran in the 19th annual Duquesne Duals at Schenley Park.
The men came out with a 1-3 record, defeating Youngstown State while falling to Duquesne, Pittsburgh, and Carnegie Mellon. The women defeated Robert Morris, and lost to Cleveland State, Duquesne, Pitt, Youngstown State, and Carnegie Mellon.
Seniors
Austin Cooper (King of Prussia, Pa./Upper Merion) and
Greg Beaudette (Johnston, R.I./Bishop Hendricken) had the biggest performances, finishing back-to-back in fifth and sixth place, respectively. Cooper raced to a time of 26:14.7, while Beaudette was right on his heels at 26:17.0, both finishing at a 5:15 per mile clip.
Three more IUP finished in the top 30 overall, with
Dalton Trump (Lancaster, Pa./J.P. McCaskey) coming in 19th (26:41.8),
Ryan Louther (Indiana, Pa./Indiana) finishing in 28th (27:13.5), and
Noah Mandel (Erie, Pa./Harbor Creek) crossing the line in 29th (27:16.5).
In the women's race, senior
Makena Felts (Lewisberry, Pa./Red Land) was IUP's top finisher in 37th place with a time of 20:03, a pace of 6:28 per mile. Freshman
Tricia Varner (Sidman, PA/Forest Mills) made her collegiate debut with a time of 21:09.5, good for 54th overall, and senior
Nicole Best (New Holland, Pa./Garden Spot) was 57th with a time of 21:13.4.
