INDIANA, Pa. – For the second time this season, IUP field hockey took down a top-10 team, as the Crimson Hawks defeated sixth-ranked Millersville 1-0 on Saturday evening at George P. Miller Stadium.
Junior midfielder
Kalista Gioglio (Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg) scored her second game-winning goal of the year in the 54th minute, and senior goaltender
Alyssa Lerda (Wexford, Pa./Pine-Richland) tallied seven saves as the Crimson Hawks evened their record at 4-4 overall on the season.
The game was also the first that officially counted in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) standings, so IUP opens its league schedule at 1-0.
The Crimson Hawks are now 2-1 on the year against top-10 competition, racking up a 2-1 win over then-seventh-ranked Kutztown last Saturday at home.
Gioglio broke the scoreless tie at 53:04, beating Millersville goalie Autumn Peters off a penalty corner by junior midfielder
Matti Reightler (Bethlehem, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic). It was Gioglio's second goal of the season, and Reightler's team-leading fourth assist.
Millersville (3-3, 0-1) had five more shots after Gioglio's goal, attempting to send the game to overtime. But Lerda came up big in the cage, saving four of those shots as she registered her first full shutout of the season, lowering her goals against average to 1.87.
