YORK, Pa. –
Regan Chalk (Hanover, PA/New Oxford) and
Nicole Smith (Dover, PA/Dover) highlighted the Crimson Hawks' Wednesday as the IUP men's and women's swim teams competed on the first day of the 2018 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships at the Graham Aquatic Center.
"We swam well across the board today and had one of the best first days we have ever had at this meet," said IUP head coach
Chris Villa. "The team is in a great spot as we take on the next three days."
Chalk finished fourth overall in the 200 IM with a time of 2:06.53, posting a new personal best in the process. She also hit an NCAA Division II B cut time in the 200 butterfly, swimming a time of 2:04.64 in the time trials.
DAY ONE RESULTS
Smith tallied a fifth place finish in the 50 freestyle with a time of 23.90. She posted a faster time in the prelims at 23.86, hitting an NCAA B cut time.
The women's 200 medley relay of Chalk, Sarah Helton,
Sara Bertram (Alexandria, Va./West Potomac) and
Jessica Cochran (Herminie, Pa./Yough) also finished fifth overall with a time of 1:46.46.
The IUP women posted four scoring performances in the 1000 freestyle:
Beatriz Gonzalez (Barcelona, Spain/Pane Manyanet) was 14th with a time of 10:41.89,
Gabrielle Gironda (Ebensburg, Pa./Central Cambria High School) was 15th with a time of 10:43.94,
Anna Moffitt (Lebanon, PA/Cedar Crest) was 17th with a time of 10:48.06, and
Sophia Manges (Indiana, Pa./Indiana High School) finished 20th with a time of 10:53.74.
The IUP women scored 140 points to close the opening day in fourth place out of 12 teams. West Chester leads with 406 points.
One the men's side, IUP's best finish came from its 200 medley relay. The team of
Sterling Tate (York, PA/Dallastown),
Colter Long (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg Area),
RJ Hammond (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) and
Noah Brockway (York, PA/Dallastown) finished with a time of 1:32.16, less than a second from second place West Chester.
The men also put up for scorers in the 1000 freestyle, led by Gerrard Morato in eighth with a tie of 9:47.53.
Lucas Bellier (Orléans, France) came in 12th with a time of 9:56.29,
Nathan Dill () was 13th at 9:57.82, and
Mace Long (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg Area) finished 15th with a time of 10:04.81.
Hammond had the best individual men's finish, touching the wall in sixth in the 200 IM with a time of 1:53.78.
Other individual scorers included
Russell Oliver (Barbados/Kelly College) in the 200 IM, finishing 15th overall with a time of 1:57.69.
Noah Brockway (York, PA/Dallastown) and
Colter Long (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg Area) finished in 12th and 13th in the 50 freestyle with times of 21.13 and 21.42, respectively.
The IUP men scored 78 points to finish the first day in fifth place out of seven teams.
