INDIANA, Pa. - Senior goalie
Olivia Accardi made a career-high eight saves but it wasn't enough as IUP field hockey fell to visiting Mansfield 2-1 in double overtime Wednesday afternoon at George P. Miller Stadium. It was the second straight double overtime game for the Crimson Hawks.
It was a defensive battle from the start, with Mansfield (3-0) holding a 6-3 shot advantage after the first half. The Mountaineers opened the scoring with a goal in the 17th minute, but IUP quickly answered as sophomore
Georgiana Chiavacci tied things up off a rebound shot from senior teammate
Kalista Gioglio.
The defense continued in the second half with just five combined shots from both teams. Mansfield had seven penalty corners in the second half, but the Crimson Hawks kept them off the board with great stick play in the defensive circle.
During the first round of overtime play, Mansfield had only one corner and outshout IUP 3-0. With solid defense on both side of the ball, play continued for a final round.
With just 1:21 remaining in the second overtime, Mansfield finally got one through the IUP defense with nice passing off the penalty corner to secure the win. In all, Mansfield outshot IUP 16-7 and had 15 penalty corners to the Crimson Hawks' three.
With this loss, the Crimson Hawks fall 1-2 on the season.
