No. 18 IUP Football wraps up regular season at Shippensburg, looks to secure playoff spot

THE GAME
The 18th-ranked Crimson Hawks close out their regular season with a road matchup at Shippensburg Saturday at Seth Grove Stadium. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. 

IUP goes for its 10th win of the season, entering the week with a 9-1 overall record. The Crimson Hawks finished the year with a 6-1 record in divisional play after their 35-6 Senior Day victory over Edinboro. QB Quinton Maxwell threw for 277 yards and 3 touchdowns, while CB Nazir Streater picked off 2 passes, broke up 3 more and had 9 tackles as IUP limited Edinboro to 258 total yards. 

Shippensburg enters with a 4-6 overall record, with all of its wins coming in the PSAC East. The Raiders have won three of their last four games and have combined for 100 points in their last two wins, including a 35-10 victory over East Stroudsburg Saturday. 

QUICK NOTES / STORY LINES
• IUP remained at No. 4 in the final NCAA regional rankings of the regular season released Monday; the top 7 teams in the final rankings advance to the Division II playoffs with the top seed earning a bye and the Nos. 2-4 seeds hosting a first round game
• IUP is one of two 1-loss teams in the Super Region One sitting one spot behind No. 3 Notre Dame (OH) with undefeated Kutztown and Slippery Rock holding onto the top two spots
• This is a rematch of last year's regular season finale that saw Shippensburg ruin IUP's Senior Day and put an end to any playoff hopes with a 45-21 win at Miller Stadium; this week will be Shippensburg's Senior Day
• Last year's win by Shippensburg broke a streak of 22 straight victories by IUP in the series, which dated back to 1988; IUP is 19-8-1 against Shippensburg on the road since 1942
• IUP's last trip to Seth Grove Stadium came in 2013 as De'Antwan Williams ran for a program record 315 yards in the Crimson Hawks' 42-21 regular season finale win
• IUP is No. 18 in the AFC Coaches' Poll for the 3rd straight week and moved up to No. 17 in the D2Football Media Top 25
• The Crimson Hawks are having one of the best offensive seasons in program history with 44.9 points and 468.0 total yards per game; They also set a school record with five 50-point games
• IUP has the top two returners in the PSAC this year with Qashah Carter leading the league in kickoff return average (27.1) while Duane Brown leads in punt return average (15.5)
• Shippensburg's Brycen Mussina has thrown for 700 yards and 7 TDs the last two weeks and averages 236.1 passing yards per game this season; IUP leads the PSAC in pass defense and have given up 200 yards to passers just three times
• QB Quinton Maxwell enters the week within striking distance of several IUP records, including passing TDs, passing yards and TDs responsible for
• WR Duane Brown has 18 total TDs (13 rec, 5 rush) and is just 3 shy of tying IUP HOFer Michael Mann (21) for the most in program history
• After missing out on the postseason last year, the Crimson Hawks look for a return trip after making the Division II playoffs in 2015, 2016 and 2017; IUP's 18 Division II playoff appearances is tied for fourth all-time (NW Missouri State 23, North Alabama 21, Grand Valley St. 19, Pittsburg St. 18)
• The Crimson Hawks entered the year as one of only nine Division II teams with 80+ wins this decade (80); New PSAC addition and former MEC power Shepherd (91) is the only other team in the region on that list

IUP RANKED REMAIN FOURTH IN NCAA REGIONAL RANKINGS
The NCAA released its final regular season Division II regional rankings Monday (Nov. 11) with IUP remaining at No. 4 for the third straight week. The top seven teams in each of the four regions advance to the NCAA Division II playoffs, with the top seed receiving a first round bye. 

CRIMSON HAWKS LOOK FOR THIRD 10-WIN SEASON SINCE 2016
A victory for the Crimson Hawks Saturday would give them their third 10-win season in the last four years - IUP went 10-2 in 2016 and 13-1 in 2017. It would also ruin Shippensburg's Senior Day, which is what the Raiders did to IUP in 2018 with a 42-21 win at Miller Stadium to close the season. The Crimson Hawks have won four straight games with a +129 point differential since their lone loss of the year at SRU. 

COACH TORTORELLA HAS HOTTEST START OF ANY IUP HEAD FOOTBALL COACH
Coach Tortorella's 26-4 record over is first 30 games was the best start of any IUP head football coach. Frank Cignetti started 24-5-1 in his first three years (1985-87), Curt Cignetti went 24-6 in his first 30 games (2011-13), and Chuck Klausing started his IUP career (1964-67) with a 23-7 record. Tortorella went 13-1 with a national semifinal appearance during his debut season of 2017, went 8-3 last year and with a 8-1 record this season has an overall mark of 30-5 (.857). 

CRIMSON HAWKS MOVE UP IN BOTH NATIONAL POLLS
Despite little movement in the coaches' and media rankings, IUP did make moves in both this week. The Crimson Hawks moved up one spot to No. 18 in the AFCA Coaches' Poll and three spots to No. 17 in the D2Football.com Media Top 25. IUP spent 38 straight weeks in the coaches' rankings between 2015-18 and each of the last 10 weeks this season.  

IUP OFFENSE PUTTING UP SOME OF BEST NUMBERS IN PROGRAM HISTORY
A change in offensive philosophy in 2019 has helped the Crimson Hawks put up some of the best numbers in program history. Entering week 11 IUP is threatening to break school records in scoring at 44.9 points/game (46.2 record), passing yards/game at 304.5 (272.1), total yards/game at 468.0 (489.6), passing TDs with 35 (40), and pass efficiency at 177.9 (183.4), among others. 

QUINTON MAXWELL IS ONE OF THE TOP QUARTERBACKS IN DIVISION II 
Grad transfer QB Quinton Maxwell has made his mark in is only year at IUP as one of the best in the nation. The former Ohio U signal caller ranks in the top 30 in Division Ii in nine categories, including 5th in passer efficiency (174.4), 5th in yards per attempt (9.81), 6th in passing TDs (25), 11th in yards per completion (15.73) and 18th in passing yards per game (252.9). Maxwell set an IUP record with three straight 300-yard passing games and is on pace to have one of the best single seasons by a QB in program history. 

DUANE BROWN PUTTING UP ONE OF BEST OFFENSIVE SEASONS IN PROGRAM HISTORY
So. WR Duane Brown has been a huge offensive weapon for the Crimson Hawks this year. The converted running back is among the PSAC and national leaders in total TDs (18), points scored (108), points per game (10.8), and receiving TDs (13). He's scored in all 10 games this season, including five times on goal line carries. Brown has done all of his damage on just 51 offensive touches as he averages a TD every 2.83 times he gets the ball. Brown has also had two punt returns for scores called back due to penalties and is 7th in Division with a 15.5 average. 

IUP IS 53-9 SINCE 2011 WHEN A PLAYER RUSHES FOR 100 YARDS AFTER EVANS' BIG DAY
Jr. RB Justice Evans posted a career-high with 175 rushing yards to go along with 2 TDs on just 11 carries in IUP's 50-23 win at Seton Hill in week nine. IUP is now 53-9 since the start of the 2011 season when a player rushes for 100 yards in a game. Five players on the roster have combined for 20 career 100-yard rushing games, including Samir Bullock with nine and Evans with eight. 

THE IUP DEFENSE RANKS AMONG THE BEST NATIONALLY
The Crimson Hawks had another standout performance in week 10, giving up just six points and 258 total yards while picking off three passes. It was the fourth game this season that IUP didn't allow a touchdown, including two shutouts, leading the PSAC and ranking 10th in Division II giving up 15.2 points per game. The Crimson Hawks are also among the nation's best in pass efficiency defense (92.27, 6th), sacks (33, 12th), total defense (275.1, 14th), rushing defense (101.6, 22nd), 3rd down conversions (.301, 22nd) and passing defense (173.5, 25th). 

CRIMSON HAWKS 22-1 SINCE 2011 WHEN THE DEFENSE SCORES A TOUCHDOWN
Sr. LB Damon Lloyd tallied the defense's second score of the season when he returned an interception 40 yards for a touchdown during the second quarter of IUP's 35-0 win over Gannon in week eight. It's the second pick-six for the Crimson Hawks this year as Sr. DE Dondrea Tillman went for 51 yards at Mercyhurst. With Lloyd's score, IUP improved to 22-1 since 2011 when the defense scores a touchdown. 

NAZIR STREATER NAMED TOP DEFENSIVE PLAYER IN PSAC WEST LAST WEEK
Jr. CB Nazir Streater was named PSAC West Defensive Athlete of the Week after picking off 2 passes, breaking up 3 more, and totaling nine tackles in IUP's 35-6 win over Edinboro in week 10. The corner helped the IUP defense limit Edinboro to 13-35 passing for 146 yards and a 55.04 efficiency rating. For the season Streater leads the PSAC and is tied for 15th in Division II with 5 interceptions and is also among the national leaders with 14 total passes defensed. 

CRIMSON HAWKS LEAD PSAC, AMONG DIVISION II's BEST IN SACKS
So. NG Dajour Fisher has a team-best 7.5 sacks this season as he leads a defense that is 1st in the PSAC and tied for 10th in Division Ii with 33.0 sacks. IUP has at least 1 sack in all 10 games this season, including seven games of at least 3, while Shippensburg has given up 31 sacks on the year. 10 IUP players have recorded a sack, including Fisher with 7.5 and Sr. DE Dondrea Tillman with 6.5 

LINEBACKERS LLOYD AND AMENDOLA LEADING THE CHARGE
Sr. LBs Damon Lloyd and Nick Amendola have been two of the biggest playmakers for the defense this year. Lloyd ranks 2nd in the PSAC and 18th in Division II with 98 total tackles, adding 5.5 TFLs, 2 forced fumbles, 2 recoveries, 1.5 sacks, 4 pass breakups and a pick-six against Gannon. Amendola is among the PSAC and Division II leaders with 4 interceptions and is 2nd on the team in tackles (67) and passes defended (8) and 3rd with 7.5 TFLs and 4.0 sacks.
