CLEVELAND – 16 Crimson Hawks hit qualifying times as the IUP men's and women's swimming teams competed in the first day of the eighth annual Magnus Cup at Cleveland State Friday.
Paige Mikesell had the top individual performance, finishing second in the 200 IM with an NCAA B time at 2:04.73.
Eight other IUP women had Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) qualifying times spread out over three events. Joining Mikesell in the 200 IM was
Rachel Johnson, who finished with a conference qualifying time of 2:08.09 and was the top finisher in the B final heat.
Five Crimson Hawks had qualifying scores in the 500 freestyle with
Olivia Santee posting the top time among IUP women's swimmers with a 5:09.34.
Gabrielle Gironda touched the wall in 5:10.05,
Colleen Como had a 5:15.02,
Clara Gracia finished with a 5:15.17 and Sophie Manges had a time of 5:19.13.
Two swimmers finished less than a second away from NCAA times in the 50 freestyle, with
Michelle Lopes finishing with a time of 24.73 and
Emma Winchell posting a 24.98.
The IUP men also had a successful night in the 200 IM with six of their seven qualifying times coming in that event.
Ryan Hartmann had IUP's top time in the event with a 1:55.60, finishing seventh overall in the A final heat.
Jackson Woolard posted a time of 1:57.01 and
Gerard Morato was close behind at 1:57.49 while
Mauricio Lobo finished in 1:58.60,
Taylor Auger went for 1:59.98 and
Kyle Mowid had a time of 2:01.60.
The men's seventh PSAC time came from
Nathan Dill, who swam a 4:55.01 in the 500 freestyle.
A total of 10 events took place on the first of the three-day meet in Cleveland with the hosts leading the way in the men's standings while sitting in third place in the women's.
The IUP women are currently fifth out of 11 schools while the men are sixth of 10 after the first day.
Day two continues Saturday with prelims at 9 a.m. and finals at 5 p.m.
