IUP sits second after strong opening day at YSU Invite

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio — Indiana University of Pennsylvania put together a strong first day at the YSU Invite on Thursday, collecting multiple top-three finishes and an individual event win to sit second in both the men's and women's team standings after the opening 12 events.

IUP's best early result came on the boards, where senior Nick Roddy placed fifth in the men's 1-meter finals with a score of 269.10, leading a trio of Crimson Hawk divers. Jeremiah Laslavic followed in sixth at 257.00, and freshman Ethan Riggle placed seventh.

In the pool, the Crimson Hawks opened the night with a runner-up finish in the women's 200 freestyle relay. Tina Cudina, Kaleese Jallow, Katie Crosscut and Kasha Stokes swam a 1:35.79, less than a second behind Edinboro.

Cudina later delivered IUP's first individual win of the meet, taking the women's 50 breaststroke in 29.51. Teammate Tabby Ward added a fifth-place finish.

In the women's 500 freestyle, Benedetta Bellini paced IUP with a fourth-place time of 5:11.57, while Summer Esson and Cally Edner also scored in the A final. IUP added another strong showing in the 200 IM, where freshman Gem Crittenden won the event in 2:05.09, and Catrina Miller took third.

The Crimson Hawks piled up more top-eight points in the men's 200 IM, with Alexander Roth finishing third in 1:54.00 and Brody Davies seventh. Stephen Goff tied for fourth in a tight men's 50 freestyle final, while Nick Vaow placed sixth.

IUP closed the evening with a third-place finish in the men's 400 medley relay, where Ty Uhlig, Patrik Kudla, Trent Powell and Goff combined for a 3:26.48. The women's medley relay team of Lilly Farmer, Miller, Crosscut and Jallow placed fourth.

Through one day, the IUP women sit second with 303 points, trailing Youngstown State but ahead of Edinboro. The IUP men are also in second with 256.5 points.

Day 2 of the YSU Invite continues Friday with prelims and finals.
