INDIANA, Pa. – The IUP swimming and diving teams earned several first-place finishes and PSAC qualifying times Saturday at the Ralph Johnson Invitational, with both the men's and women's squads narrowly finishing second to PennWest Clarion inside Zink Pool.
Clarion edged the IUP women 120-103 and topped the men 116-108, but the Crimson Hawks claimed a number of individual victories and top conference marks throughout the meet.
For the IUP women, junior Kasha Stokes led the way with a win in the 100-yard backstroke (57.95), hitting a PSAC qualifying mark, while Tina Cudina dominated the sprints — winning both the 50 free (24.03) and 100 free (52.53), each under the PSAC standard. Sophmore Gem Crittenden also continued her strong start, winning the 200-yard individual medley (2:10.36) and 100-yard butterfly (57.89).
The Crimson Hawks' 200-yard medley relay team of Stokes, Cudina, Crittenden and Kaleese Jallow opened the meet with a first-place finish in 1:47.75, more than three seconds ahead of Clarion's top relay.
On the men's side, Ty Uhlig led IUP with wins in both the 200 free (1:44.93) and 500 free (4:49.32), each comfortably within PSAC qualifying times. Trent Powell captured the 100 fly in 52.16, while Stephen Goff won the 100 free in 48.46 and placed second in the 50 free (21.89).
The IUP men also took the top spot in the 200 free relay, with the quartet of Nick Vaow, Fadi Abdelshahid, Rey Nunez and Powell combining for a time of 1:25.89.
In diving, Jeremiah Laslavic won the men's 3-meter event with a score of 313.28 points, while Nick Roddy added a fifth-place finish on the 1-meter board.
The Crimson Hawks return to action next weekend when they travel for a dual meet against Bloomsburg.
