ERIE, Pa. – Mercyhurst's Alexis Skibitsky scored the game-winning goal in a shootout as IUP field hockey dropped a 2-1 decision to the Lakers Wednesday night.
The game lasted 80 minutes – a full regulation and two 10-minute overtime periods – with each team scoring just once in the first quarter.
In the shootout the Lakers hit on the first two strokes while IUP didn't connect on either of its three. On the fourth attempt, Skibitsky scored to clinch it for the Lakers. She got the credit for the goal as Mercyhurst posted a 2-1 double overtime win.
The loss for the Crimson Hawks came despite owning a 21-5 advantage in shots in the game, including 11-5 with shots on goal. IUP limited Mercyhurst to just two shots in the first half, one in the third quarter, and one in each of the overtime periods.
IUP earned three penalty corners and took four shots in the opening quarter, with
Brianna Lubarsky putting one into the bottom right corner on an assist from
Juliette Sauter. That score came with just over a minute to play in the quarter to tie the game.
The Crimson Hawks had several chances in the second half and in overtime with 15 shots and four corners, but Mercyhurst goalie Libby Jones tallied 10 saves in the cage.
The loss was the third straight for the Crimson Hawks after a 4-0 start as they drop to 4-3.

The Crimson Hawks return home to host No. 3 East Stroudsburg (7-1) which lost its first game of the season tonight with a 2-1 double overtime decision with Kutztown. The game will be the conference opener for both teams.
