Crimson Hawks host Edinboro on Senior Day

INDIANA, Pa. - The Crimson Hawks will host their final regular season home game and celebrate Senior Day as Edinboro comes to Indiana this Saturday. Kickoff at George P. Miller Stadium is 2 p.m. 

IUP is 5-2 overall, 4-1 in the division and looks to return to its winning ways after a heartbreaking 38-34 loss to No. 5 Cal U at home last week. The Crimson Hawks totaled 422 yards, held a +11:50 advantage in time of possession, and had 4 sacks, but the Vulcans scored 21 fourth quarter points and and won the turnover battle 3-0, overcoming a 23-10 IUP halftime lead. 

Edinboro is coming off a 21-18 loss at Gannon and is 1-6 overall, 1-4 in the division. The Fighting Scots held a 10-7 lead over the Golden Knights but gave up 14 fourth quarter points in the loss. GU's Melvin Blanks rushed for 239 yards and 2 TDs to help the Knights total 316 yards on the ground and 432 overall. 

QUICK NOTES / STORYLINES
• The season's first NCAA regional rankings debuted Monday with the Hawks sitting at No. 7. The top 7 teams in the final rankings advance to the Division II playoffs with the top seed earning a bye and the Nos. 2-4 seeds hosting a first round game.
• The Hawks' strong strength of schedule has them in the top-7 as the top-ranked 2-loss team in Super Region One. Three teams above IUP have undefeated regional records while the other three have 1 loss.
• IUP will celebrate the careers' of 12 seniors Saturday prior to kickoff. The group enters having helped the Hawks to a 36-8 (.818) record since 2017, the second best record by a senior class since 2005.
• The Hawks have won six straight games in their series with Edinboro. Four of those wins have come by 21 or more points, including the 35-6 victory at Indiana in 2019. 
• IUP has had big individual offensive performances in recent games against Edinboro - WR JoJo Gause (7 rec. 117 yds, 2 TD) in 2019, QB Lenny Williams (334 tot. yds, 4 TDs) in 2017, WR Walt Pegues (7 rec, 169 yds) in 2016, and RB Chris Temple (234 rush yds, 6 TDs) in 2015.
• Gr. QB Harry Woodbery has two straight 300-yard games and has thrown for 9 TDs over the last two weeks. He's the highest rated QB in the PSAC West at 169.7 while his 3.6 pass TDs per game are 2nd in the conference. 
• IUP is scoring 43.2 points against PSAC West opponents and is averaging 453.3 yards of total offense the last three weeks. The Hawks averaged 334 yards in their first four games. 
• Edinboro is allowing over 386 yards and nearly 28 points per game. The Scots have given up 30+ points three times - Slippery Rock (49), West Chester (41) and Shippensburg (30).
• The Crimson Hawks are 7th in Division II with a +1.29 turnover margin per game (+9 on the year). IUP lost the turnover battle 3-0 last week. 
• Edinboro has gone over 300 yards of total offense just twice this year - 365 against West Chester and 355 against Mercyhurst. The Scots' 3.9 yards per play is 14th in the PSAC. 
• IUP's defense gives up 400 yards per game. Cal U's 422 yards last week was the most by an IUP opponent since week two (554, Shepherd).

IUP RANKED SEVENTH IN SEASON'S FIRST REGIONAL RANKINGS
The NCAA released its first set of Division II regional rankings on Monday (Oct. 25) with IUP sitting at No. 7 on the 10-team list. The top seven teams in each of the four regions advance to the NCAA
Division II playoffs, with the top seed receiving a first round bye. 

CRIMSON HAWKS HOST EDINBORO IN FINAL REGULAR SEASON HOME GAME
After last week's loss, the Crimson Hawks look to regain momentum heading into Senior Day and the home stretch of the regular season. IUP has won six straight meetings with the Fighting Scots by an average score of of 33.7-12.7 (+21). Prior to kickoff IUP will honor 12 seniors who have helped the program to a 36-8 (.818) overall record, 22-4 (.846) divisional record, and playoff appearances in 2017 and 2019. 

COACH TORTORELLA THROUGH 40 GAMES
The Mercyhurst game four weeks ago marked Coach Tortorella's 40th game as head coach of the Crimson Hawks. Now with 44 games under his belt, Tortorella owns a record of 36-8 (.818), including a 22-4 (.846) mark against PSAC West schools. He reached 30 wins faster than any other IUP coach (35 games), and has two NCAA playoff berths (2017, 2019), division, PSAC, and regional titles (2017), and a 7-4 record against top-25 opponents. 

CRIMSON HAWKS BACK OUT OF NATIONAL RANKINGS
For the second time this year the Crimson Hawks fell out of the top 25 rankings in both the AFCA Coaches' and D2Football.com Media polls. IUP had moved up to No. 23 (coaches) and No. 24 (media) after the win over No. 6 Slippery Rock. Dating back to 2016, IUP has been nationally-ranked in 53 of 60 possible national ranking releases, including 36 straight weeks from 2016-18.

IUP OFFENSE DRASTICALLY DIFFERENT FROM FIRST TWO WEEKS
Although the sample size is small, the IUP offense excelled over the last five games compared to the first two weeks of the season. In addition to averaging over 43 points and 413 yards per game, the Hawks have converted 53.4 percent of their 3rd down chances in the last five games. That number alone would be good for 4th in Division II (1st in PSAC). 

WOODBERY *RANKED AMONG BEST QUARTERBACKS IN DIVISION II
Woodbery has made his presence felt, totaling 20 touchdowns in his five starts this year. The grad transfer has two 5-touchdown performances, including a program-record 5 TD passes at Slippery Rock. He has a 169.69 pass efficiency rating, which ranks 3rd in the PSAC and would rank 9th in Division II if he played in enough games to qualify nationally. His 24.0 points responsible per game would be 3rd in the DII rankings and his His 62.8 completion percentage would rank 28th. 

CHARLES AMONG NATIONAL LEADERS IN RECEIVING TOUCHDOWNS
Sr. WR Irvin Charles is coming off his biggest game of the season with 7 receptions, 143 yards and 2 TDs against 5th-ranked Cal U. His team-best 10 touchdowns this year also lead the PSAC and are tied for 10th in Division II. Charles has caught at least 1 TD in all seven games and has 5 in the last two weeks.

BROWN AMONG NATIONAL LEADERS IN RECEIVING YARDS
Jr. WR Duane Brown leads the PSAC and ranks 13th in Division II with 103.3 yards receiving in his six games played. His 6.8 receptions per game also leads the PSAC and is tied for 10th in the country, as he has 41 catches for 620 yards and 4 TDs this year. Brown has four 100-yard receiving games, including three straight outings against Gannon, Clarion and Slippery Rock. 

EVANS AMONG IUP's TOP-10 IN CAREER RUSHING YARDS
Sr. RB Justice Evans moved up to 7th at IUP with 2,725 career rushing yards. He burst onto the scene as a freshman in 2017 with 1,011 yards and led the Hawks in rushing in 2018 with 741 yards. This year he is 2nd on the team with 282 yards on 68 carries and is just 62 away from tying Lenny Williams (2015-18) for 6th all-time with 2,787 yards. 

CRIMSON HAWKS AMONG BEST IN NATION IN TURNOVER MARGIN, FORCING TOs
IUP is tied for the PSAC lead and ranks 7th in Division II with a +1.29 turnover margin per game - or +9 for the season. This is despite turning the ball over three times last week, losing the turnover battle for the first time this season. IUP's 5 turnovers given up is tied for the 3rd lowest in the country while its 14 turnovers forced ranks 3rd in the PSAC. IUP's 10 interceptions are tied for 2nd in the PSAC and 21st in Division II and have come from seven different players. Sr. CB Bryce Howard, Fr. FS Charles Ingram, and Fr. SS Jaheim Howard each have a team-best 2 picks. 

CRIMSON HAWKS ARE 23-1 SINCE 2011 WHEN THE DEFENSE SCORES
Jr. DT Raunya Mitchell scored the defense's first touchdown of the season when he picked off a tipped pass and rumbled 21 yards for a score in the season-opening win over Kutztown. The Crimson Hawks have 28 defensive touchdowns since 2011 and boast a 23-1 record since then when the defense scores.

LUTHER NEARLY PERFECT IN FIRST SEASON
Fr. PK Tyler Luther has had a successful debut season, converting 31-32 extra point attempts while making each of his five field goal tries for 46 points. He made two field goals and went 6-6 in PAT tries in the win at No. 6 Slippery Rock, earning PSAC West Special Teams Athlete of the Week honors.
