IUP Baseball clashes with Cal U in weekend series

INDIANA, Pa. –  The Crimson Hawks enter the second weekend of divisional play as they square off against Cal U in a four-game series that starts Friday in Washington, Pa. at Wild Things Park. The series wraps up at Dougherty Field in Indiana on Saturday, with both doubleheaders slated for 1 p.m. starts.  

IUP enters with a 1-11 overall record and 0-4 mark in the PSAC West. The Vulcans are 10-6 overall and 1-3 in the division.
 
Spectators
IUP Athletics is allowing spectators at outdoor events this spring. Any fans visiting Owen J. Dougherty Field are asked to keep socially distant from each other, participating teams, student-athletes, school officials and other game day personnel. When not able to socially distant, please wear masks.

There is a maximum of 640 individuals allowed at Wild Things Park. The number includes the student-athletes, coaching staff, umpires, and game management staff, in addition to spectators. Spectators are REQUIRED to wear masks at Wild Things Park at all times. Spectators will enter and exit the field following the designated signage near the ticket window. Once capacity is reached, additional guests will NOT be permitted in the stadium. More information from Cal U.
 
Last Time Out
>> The Crimson Hawks were swept by Seton Hill to open division play last weekend. 
>> The 11th-ranked Griffins won by scores of 12-0, 5-1, 7-1 and 14-0. 
>> Sophomore Harrison Pontoli went 5-12 with a double during the series, but saw his 11-game hit streak come to an end Saturday.

Notes
>> This will be the second time in the last three weekends these two teams have met. IUP and Cal U played a home-and-home March 20-21 with the Vulcans winning the games by scores of 18-3 and 6-5. The games were scheduled outside of the mandated divisional schedule and do not count in the conference standings. 
>> The Vulcans have won seven straight in the series dating back to 2018. IUP has fared better in the series in games at Dougherty Field, going 6-7 in home contests since 2014. 
>> Cal U lost its series with Slippery Rock last weekend, going 1-3. 
>> Pontoli's 11-game hit streak was the longest by an IUP player since Chris Eisel finished the 2018 season on a 13-game hit streak. 
>> Pontoli leads the team with a .356 batting average, 16 base hits, and five multi-hit games.
>> Drew Weglarz hit his first career home run during the 6-5 loss at Cal U two weeks ago.
>> Tyler Diefenbach and Jake Decker combined for 10 strikeouts in 8.1 innings two weeks ago against the Vulcans.
