INDIANA, Pa. - Battling constant rain under the lights, the IUP field hockey team extended its season-opening win streak with a 4-0 victory over visiting Mercyhurst at Miller Stadium Wednesday night.
Blaise Cugini scored a pair of third quarter goals while
Georgiana Chiavacci had a goal and two assists to lead the way offensively for the Crimson Hawks, who are now 5-0 to start the season.
The game was a little over five minutes old when a driving rainstorm blew through Miller Stadium to force a short postponement due to visibility on the field. Shortly after play resumed,
Carly Fordham opened the scoring on a scramble in front of the cage. The remainder of the game remained wet with rain as IUP outshot Mercyhurst 19-2.
Cugini opened the second half with a pair of goals just 3:35 apart to extend IUP's lead to 3-0. Chiavacci added a backhanded goal off a scramble to give the Hawks a four-goal lead heading to the fourth.
The 5-0 start is the best for the program since the 2008 squad opened the year with 13 straight wins en route to a 15-3 record and NCAA quarterfinal finish.
