MANSFIELD, Pa. – Ninth-ranked Mansfield struck early in the first quarter and held on for a 1-0 victory against visiting IUP on Wednesday afternoon.
Despite holding the edge in shots during the first half, IUP (7-5, 4-3) went into the intermission trailing 1-0 and could not break through into the second half. Graduate transfer
Blaise Cugini, who played her undergraduate tenure at IUP, found the net just over two minutes into the game.
Mansfield (9-5, 3-3) clamped down defensively throughout the game as goalie August Lewis made four saves for her seventh shutout of the season.
Roos van Herel and
Aubree Dorsey posted three shots apiece to lead IUP while
Anita Planella made one save.
Mansfield ended the game with a 16-8 edge in shots and the same margin in corners.
IUP drew five penalty corners in the opening half, unable to convert despite some quality passing.
Devon Johnson had a shot denied in the second quarter before Lewis stopped a Dorsey look minutes later.
Mansfield had a flurry of penalty corners and five shots blocked at the onset of the third quarter with the IUP defense doing its part in a 1-0 game. Mansfield continuing holding possession for much of the quarter, maintaining its one-goal edge.
The Mounties continued the pressure, sending two chances with to begin the fourth quarter. IUP earned a corner with under seven minutes remaining in the fourth, but Dorsey could not find a lane to push the shot through.
Mansfield had one more stretch of corner chances over the final minute, securing the shutout.
