INDIANA, Pa. – Lauren Horning's first collegiate goal proved to be the eventual game-winner as IUP finished out the home portion of the 2023 schedule with a 2-1 win against Frostburg State on Tuesday night under clear skies at Miller Stadium.
After a scoreless first half, IUP (8-6) found itself down 1-0 early in the third quarter. The Crimson Hawks responded with a pair of first collegiate goals in the third, coming in the form of the tying goal from
Devon Johnson before Horning's go-ahead tally just over 10 minutes later.
Frostburg State (8-8) made the most of its limited opportunities as Paige Leitzel buried the Bobcats' only shot on goal. Overall, IUP held a 20-4 advantage in shots and a 14-4 edge in corners.
FSU goalie Zoe Barnes racked up 11 saves on the night as IUP sent a large volume of shots on cage.
Trailing by one, the Hawks netted the equalizer as Johnson deflected home a pass from
Roos van Herel at 32:28. Johnson had a quality look just moments before on a penalty corner as Barnes booted the chance aside. Johnson would not be denied on the second chance, squeezing the deflection along the right post for the Crimson Hawks.
Horning closed out the scoring later in the third quarter, taking a long feed in the middle of the circle before dodging a defender and smacking a backhand chance past Barnes for her first collegiate goal.
From there, IUP clamped down on the defensive side the rest of the way into the fourth quarter.
IUP previously posted a 2-0 win against Frostburg State at Bobcat Stadium on September 15.
Johnson and
Jess Davidson had a game-high three shots each for the Crimson Hawks as head coach
Kelly Terwilliger worked in a large chunk of the lineup.
