Field hockey completes season sweep of Mercyhurst with offensive outburst

ERIE, Pa. – Two goals each from Sydney Schmouder and Jess Davidson highlighted a five-goal outburst for IUP field hockey in a 5-1 victory at Mercyhurst on Wednesday afternoon.
 
IUP (6-3, 3-1) held a 2-1 lead at the intermission and used a decisive two-goal swing in the third quarter to build a comfortable lead heading into the final 15 minutes. Mia Gerick netted her first collegiate goal early in the second half, adding to the variety of IUP scorers.
 
The Hawks held a 19-9 advantage in shots, controlling the contest from the start. Anita Planella posted four saves in goal for IUP, which limited Mercyhurst (2-8, 0-4) to a combined two goals over two meetings.
 
Davidson continues guiding the IUP offense, posting her ninth and 10th goals of the season at 6:22 and 37:23. Scmouder, who scored her first collegiate goal on September 26 at Slippery Rock, opened and closed the at 4:58 and 49:34.
 
The Hawks held a 12-8 edge in penalty corners and placed 15 of 19 shots on goal. IUP started the game with a flurry of offensive chances, including two from Schmouder before she eventually lifted the Hawks ahead 1-0 about five minutes in.
 
Around one minute later, Davidson doubled the IUP lead in the opening quarter. Mercyhurst sliced the IUP lead in half in the first with Lexi Odrobina finding the net for the lone Laker tally of the contest.
 
 Gerick quickly expanded the lead back to a pair of goals for IUP in the third before Davidson made it a 4-1 game.  In the fourth, Schmouder logged the lone tally off a penalty corner for the Hawks.
