ORLANDO, Fla. – IUP women's tennis saw its stellar 2022-23 campaign come to a close on Friday afternoon in sunny Orlando, dropping a 4-1 decision to Wayne State (Mich.) in the NCAA Round of 16.
Making its 15th all-time NCAA Tournament appearance, IUP battled for the doubles point with victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 flights. The Hawks entered the NCAA Tournament as the 11 seed, facing the six seed in Wayne State.
Lydia Vlachou and
Laura Dunarova rolled to a 6-2 victory before
Joanna Stralka and
Natalie Kmoskova held on for a 6-4 triumph against Wayne State's Malak Arafat and Dea Gorgidze.
Wayne State countered back with a pair of singles wins to take a 2-1 lead. Shanice Weekes posted the initial singles victory for Wayne State at the six spot, defeating Dunarova by a 6-2, 6-2 count. Anais Ruyssen knocked off
Karolin Kirchtag at the No. 1 flight by identical set scores of 6-3, 6-3.
Wayne State continued its momentum in singles action despite IUP staying competitive.
Lydia Vlachou tried to work her way back in the second set, ultimately falling at the No. 5 flight by scores of 6-2 and 6-4.
Malak Arafat closed out an extended three-set third singles flight, finishing out the match.
IUP is now 23-15 all-time in NCAA Tournament matchups.
