FROSTBURG, Md. – The IUP field hockey team posted its first shutout victory of the season, blanking Frostburg State in a 2-0 victory at Bobcat Stadium on Friday night.
IUP (3-1) opened the scoring in the first quarter as
Jess Davidson found the net for the fourth consecutive game, coming off a
Roos van Herel feed for a quick 1-0 edge about six minutes in. It was the first of two goals for Davidson, who has six on the season after Friday night.
It was part of a strong first half for IUP, which outshot Frostburg State (4-2) by a 7-3 margin over the initial 30 minutes. Overall, IUP outshot Frostburg State 16-8 for the game and held a 12-6 edge in penalty corners.
The Crimson Hawks had a pair of early chances in the second quarter from
Lauren Horning and
Cara Betancourt, prompting saves from Frostburg State goalie Zoe Barnes. IUP continued to be the aggressor, drawing multiple penalty corners in the second quarter before Frostburg found some offensive footing.
Anita Planella denied a Paige Leitzel chance before Macy Layfield sent a chance wide with under five minutes left in the half. Each side had a chance within the opening six minutes of the half with both goalies coming up with stops.
Planella finished with four saves, playing all 60 minutes in goal.
Mia Hutchinson had a pair of chances denied in succession as the Crimson Hawks looked to add to the advantage in the third quarter. Davidson doubled the Hawks lead, burying a feed Horning at the 42:15 mark of the contest.
From there, IUP closed out the victory by clamping down over the final period.
