INDIANA, Pa. – IUP (6-9) field hockey knocked off previously undefeated Shippensburg (16-1) in a 1-0 overtime victory Wednesday night at Miller Stadium.
A familiar scene after the teams just met four days ago at Robb Sports Complex where Shippensburg powered over and won 4-0, last Saturday.
With this victory, the Hawks snapped a 16-game losing streak against the Raiders with their last win being in September of 2012.
Shippensburg was quick to get started as their offense controlled the majority of the first half, continuing into the second. On the night IUP posted eight shots with five being on target and Shippensburg posted 13 with 12 being on target.
Despite the Raiders' significant advantage in penalty corners (16), IUP's defense, led by goalie
Brooke Eberly, stood firm and secured a shutout. Eberly recorded 11 saves, and the defense contributed one additional save along with several deflections.
In overtime, both teams had two shot attempts. With under two minutes to go, IUP took a corner and
Sydney Schmouder passed the ball to
Jess Davidson who shot it straight past the defenders and goalie to the back board, marking her eighth goal this season.
Cassie Romanczuk led the Hawks with four shots, three of which were on target, while Davidson added two shots on goal and
Lauren Horning contributed two as well.
