BETHANY, W.Va. – The IUP women's cross country program opened the season on Thursday evening at the West Liberty Invitational, notching fifth overall.
Kutztown placed four runners inside the top 10 overall, running away with first place in the meet.
The race featured 11 total schools (nine teams) and 88 total runners.
Hannah Weaver and
Julia O'Brien led the charge for the Crimson Hawks, finishing the 5K course in 20:05.
"We needed to get that first race out of the way," IUP head coach
Joey Zins said. "There were a number of very good individual performances, but we continue looking to improve team-wise, beginning next week at Robert Morris."
Katie McCormick clocked in 20:51, good for 28th place. Sophomore
Lexi Lovrich posted 30th overall in 21:05, while
Stella Kuntz followed closely behind in 21:10 (32nd).
Abby Douglas was also among the pack of IUP runners, crossing the line in 33rd (21:12).
Kalynne Ziegler posted 36th for the Hawks in 21:39.
"It was good to get back out there in a competitive environment to see where we can improve," Zins continued.

IUP is back in action next weekend, returning to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania for the RMU Colonial Invitational on Saturday, September 14.
