The IUP Cross Country teams opened their 2025 campaign at the Edinboro Distance Festival, a meet that doubled as a preview of this fall's PSAC Championships. On a course known for challenging hills and big-time competition, the Crimson Hawks left with more than just results—they left with identity-shaping performances. 

The women's 5k and men's 6k races were shorter than the usual collegiate distances, but they provided the right stage for IUP to set the tone. The Crimson Hawk women, led by veteran Stella Kuntz and fellow leader Katie McCormick, finished ahead of two PSAC opponents in a performance fueled by youth. With a roster made up mostly of freshmen and redshirt freshmen, this opener gave the young squad their first true taste of collegiate racing.  

On the men's side, the Crimson Hawks made a loud statement by finishing second overall. The charge was led by Mike Formica, who not only finished inside the top five but also broke the course record. Right alongside him was teammate Nate Kociela, securing another top five spot and showing that IUP's front pack will be a force this fall. 

This meet also marked the debut of two new assistant coaches—Greg Rager guiding the men and Jenna Lezanic leading the women. 

The Hawks set a standard towards what they want to this this season with today's performance. The team will look to carry their momentum in their next race at Allegheny College on Sept. 20.
