PREVIEW: IUP baseball set for 2025 PSAC Tournament

INDIANA, Pa. – IUP baseball begins play in the 2025 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships this week. The Crimson Hawks face East Stroudsburg in a rematch of last year's postseason on Wednesday, May 7 at 9:30 a.m. from Millersville's Cooper Park. 
 
The tournament begins with a single-elimination opening round on Wednesday (four games). From there, the advancing teams will move into a double-elimination bracket for the remainder of the tournament. 

The winner of Wednesday's game between IUP/East Stroudsburg faces the winner of Seton Hill/Shippensburg on Thursday, May 8 at 10 a.m.

IUP POSTSEASON HISTORY 
>> Wednesday marks IUP's 18th PSAC Tournament appearance since 1973. 
>> The Hawks are making their third consecutive PSAC Tournament appearance.
>> IUP boasts five PSAC Championships in program history, but have not hoisted the conference crown since 1990. 

SERIES / EAST STROUDSBURG NOTES  
>> The last time these teams met was last year in the 2024 PSAC Tournament. East Stroudsburg defeated IUP in game five, 6-5 to drop IUP into the elimination bracket. IUP stayed alive with a 3-2 win over Shippensburg in game seven, but lost in game nine against ESU, with a score of 2-0 to drop out of the tournament. 
>> East Stroudsburg has the edge with 15 wins and IUP has seven wins. The last time these teams met in the regular season was in 2023 when they split the series.  
>> The Warriors enter the tournament with a 35-13 overall record and are 19-9 in conference play, as the second seed in the east. 
>> ESU have been PSAC Tournament runners-up last season and in 2022. This will be their fourth consecutive appearance. 
>> They rank sixth in the conference in batting average (.296), second in runs (343), fourth in doubles (87), and second in home runs (45). They are second with 121 stolen bases on 148 attempts. 
  
IUP NEWS/NOTES 
>> IUP enters the postseason with an overall record of 24-25, going 17-11 in the PSAC West. 
>> The four-year head coach and former Major League pitcher, Steve Kline, is 117-94 (.555) at the helm of the Crimson Hawks. 
>> After making a trip to the World Series last season, IUP boasted the most season wins in program history with 41.  
>> IUP began the season 3-17 just before a win over Fairmont State kick started a 21-8 record to finish the season, which included a 10-game winning streak. 
>> IUP ranks third in the PSAC in fielding percentage (.973) and in doubles (93). 
>> IUP had five All-PSAC Team selections, the last time they notched four or more selections was in 2013. 
>> Senior Davin Landers (catcher) and junior Elijah Dunn (outfield) were named All-PSAC West First Team selections, marking their first All-Conference honors.  
>> Throughout the season, Landers has scored 18 runs, notched 33 hits, hit eight doubles and three homers, and had one triple. As the catcher, Landers is second on the team with 155 putouts and has 16 assists.  
>> Dunn ranks seventh in the PSAC in home runs (11), 25th in RBIs (35), seventh in slugging percentage (.639), and has a fielding percentage of 1.000 with 61 putouts. In program history, Dunn currently ranks fifth in season home runs and fifth in career home runs (22). 
>> Sophomore Ricardo Aponte (outfield) was named All-PSAC Second Team for the second consecutive year. Aponte posts a .325 batting average, leads the team in runs (33), ranks second in hits (51) and doubles (12), and hit five home runs.
>> Fifth year transfers Mitchell Grosch (second base) and Mike Huber (designated hitter) were both named to the All-PSAC West Second Team.
>> Grosch posts a .318 batting average, ranks third on the team in runs (31) and hits (47), totals eight doubles, and hit five homers. At second base, he had 57 putouts and 74 assists.  
>> Huber leads the team in four categories. Among the conference, he ranks 16th in batting average (.355), 17th in hits (54), and seventh in doubles (16). He has stolen seven bases, drawn 20 walks, and leads the team in runs (33) and in putouts (172).
