KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The IUP field hockey team traveled east to take on top-ranked Kutztown, the No. 1 team in NCAA Division II according to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association poll. The Crimson Hawks entered the game with three consecutive shutouts to start the season, but fell to the Golden Bears, 4-1.
The match remained scoreless until the final seconds of the first quarter, when Kutztown scored at the 14:30 mark. The Golden Bears added another goal early in the second quarter before IUP junior midfielder Lilly Fringer won a one-on-one battle to score the Crimson Hawks' lone goal.
Kutztown added two more goals in the second half to seal the victory.
IUP recorded seven shots, with five on goal, forcing the Kutztown goalkeeper into four saves. The Golden Bears took 12 shots, 10 of which were on target, with IUP junior goalkeeper Celeste Paliaroli making six saves. Fringer led IUP with four shots, all on goal.
IUP has the weekend off before returning home to host Lander at George P. Miller Stadium on Tuesday, Sept. 23. The game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
