Aponte, Pikula earn PSAC West weekly honors

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. — With the PSAC spring regular season entering its final week, IUP claimed both West Athlete of the Week honors for the diamond sports as Ricardo Aponte earned the baseball award and Madison Pikula took home the softball honor.

Aponte, the Crimson Hawks' leadoff hitter and offensive catalyst, batted .500 over five games, going 9-for-18 with three extra-base hits and five RBIs.

He drove in at least one run in each game, reached base consistently and scored four runs while helping set the tone at the top of the lineup.

For softball, Pikula earned the Athlete of the Week award for the second time this season after batting .500, going 8-for-16 with 10 RBIs.

She posted a game-high five RBIs in IUP's 17-0 win over Edinboro. Four of her eight hits went for extra bases, including two home runs.

Combined, IUP baseball and softball went 8-1 last week, strengthening both teams' positions in the PSAC playoff race.
