IUP basketball players Justina Mascaro and Chucky Humphries were named IUP Athletes of the Week, announced by the sports information office Tuesday morning.
This is Mascaro’s second straight IUP weekly honor and the first career for Humphries.
Mascaro helped the 11th-ranked women’s basketball team to a pair of conference comeback victories, defeating Lock Haven Friday and Mercyhurst Monday. The junior guard averaged 21.0 points and 6.5 rebounds in the two victories but did most of her damage during second half rallies.
Mascaro opened the weekend with 22 points against Lock Haven, including 18 points in the second half as the Crimson Hawks came back from 13 points down to win 64-51.
On Monday Mascaro battled through an early first quarter injury to score 20 points on 8-of-16 shooting in 31 minutes. With IUP trailing by eight at halftime, she scored 12 points in the second half to help the Crimson Hawks win 61-55.
Humphries did a little bit of everything this weekend for the ninth-ranked IUP men’s basketball program, as the Crimson Hawks racked up double-digit victories over Lock Haven and Mercyhurst.
The senior forward averaged 8.0 points and 9.0 rebounds, adding six assists, six blocks and four steals. He posted a career-high four blocks in Friday’s win over Lock Haven, with all four coming during a 1:19 span at the end of the first half.
Humphries followed Friday’s performance with a career-highs of 11 rebounds and four assists in Monday’s win over Mercyhurst. He blocked two more shots and had three steals defensively.
