IUP basketball players
Malik Miller and
Lexi Griggs have been named IUP Athletes of the Week, announced by the sports information office Monday morning.
This is Miller's fifth career IUP weekly honor, including the first this year, and the second of the season for Griggs.
The two helped the IUP men's and women's teams sweep two conference doubleheaders over Edinboro and Cal U this past week.
Miller posted 22-point performances in each game while averaging 5.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists with four steals and six 3-pointers. He had a big first half performance Wednesday, scoring 17 points on 7-of-12 shooting with three 3-pointers as the Crimson Hawks got out to a 41-26 lead at halftime.
Miller then had a big second half in the comeback win over Cal U, scoring 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting with four rebounds and three assists in the final 20 minutes of an 86-69 game. In the first half he started the IUP rally as the Crimson Hawks trailed 20-4 seven minutes into the contest.
Griggs had her biggest performance in the Crimson Hawks' biggest game of the year, scoring a season-high 22 points on 10-of-14 shooting in the 76-61 victory over the Vulcans Saturday night. She scored 13 of IUP's 27 first half points and then scored six points in the final quarter to help the Crimson Hawks pull away from their rivals.
She added 10 points on 5-of-7 shooting with three rebounds, two steals and a block in the 66-63 win at Edinboro Wednesday. For the week she averaged 16.0 points and 5.0 rebounds, shot 71.4 percent from the floor with three blocks and three steals.
