Three IUP Women Post NCAA B Cut Times in Season Opening Meet at Edinboro

Three IUP women earned NCAA B cuts while a combined 15 men and women made PSAC times in a total of 22 events in a dual meet sweep of Edinboro in the opening swim meet of the 2010-11 season.

The Crimson Hawk women won by a score of 168-91 and the men took a 143-114 victory.

Freshman Allyson Mitidieri (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) had B cut times in winning the 100 breaststroke (1:07.25) and 200 breaststroke (2:26.11). She also met the NCAA standard and had the best time at the meet in the 200 individual medley (2:11.80) but that did not count in the team scores.

Jackie Hynson (King George, VA/King George), a two-time All-American in her first season at IUP a year ago, made the B cut and took first in the 200 butterfly (2:07.75) and 200 backstroke (2:06.89) and also won the 100 butterfly (59.75).

Ashley McAteer (Irwin/Penn-Trafford) was the third IUP woman to get a B cut time, achieving it in the 50 freestyle (24.09) while also taking first in the 100 freestyle (54.03).

Ally Long (Frederick, MD/Frederick) posted wins in the 500 freestyle (5:19.20), 1000 freestyle (10:48.40) and 100 backstroke (1:01.03), and Lauren Alshouse (Lancaster/Conestoga Valley) touched first in the 200 freestyle (1:59.55).

IUP won the 200 medley relay with the team of Hynson, Mitidieri, Alshouse and McAteer turning in a time of 1:50.18. McAteer, Alshouse, Nikki Newman (Meadville/Meadville) and Christina Janosky (Dover, Pa. /Dover ) had the best time in the 200 freestyle relay (1:40.24) but that also did not count in the team scores.

On the men's side, Walter Smith (Annandale, VA/Annandale) and David Donovan (Edinboro/General McLane) won two individual events with Smith also swimming a leg on the winning team in the 200 medley relay. Smith had winning times of 22.37 in the 50 freestyle and 1:46.96 in the 200 freestyle. Donovan took the 500 freestyle (5:01.89) and 1000 freestyle (10:12.86).

Smith teamed with Rudy da Costa (Durbin, South Africa/Westville), Nate Stephens and Stephen Long to post a time of 1:38.19 in the 200 medley relay. Stephens also won the 100 breaststroke (1:03.34), da Costa took the 200 backstroke (1:55.54) and Long captured the 100 butterfly (53.25).

Both IUP teams are back in action Friday with a dual meet at Wheeling Jesuit.
