Julian Sanders (Medford, NJ/Shawnee) and
Marcel Souberbielle (Montevideo, Uruguay/Uruguayan American School) both established career scoring highs to lead IUP to an 83-70 win over Holy Family in a game played at DeGol Arena at St. Francis.
The game was played at St. Francis since the gym at Memorial Field House had already been set up for December graduation ceremonies scheduled for Sunday.
Sanders scored 31 points, including 22 in the first half on six 3-pointers, and freshman Souberbielle added 21 off the bench to go along with a game-high nine rebounds to help the Crimson Hawks (6-2) win their third straight. Only
Darryl Webb (Elkridge, Md./Long Reach) with 32 points vs. Seton Hill has scored more points in a game than Sanders so far this season.
Sanders made five from beyond the arc in a span of just 4:10 in the first half to help turn an early 21-12 deficit into a 33-25 lead. Souberbielle was 4 of 4 from both the field and free throw line off the bench to score 13 points over the opening 20 minutes to stake IUP to a 45-33 lead at the break.
The Crimson Hawks never let their lead get below double figures during the second half and built as much as a 21-point advantage at 68-47 on a Webb jumper midway through the period. Holy Family got within 74-64 on a layup by Tim Smith with just over four minutes left but managed just six points the rest of the way.
Webb was the third IUP player in double figures with 13 and now has 1,542 career points to move past Derrick Freeman for fourth in school history, just 22 behind third-place Jack Crossan.
Kevin Stewart (Philadelphia, Pa./Academy Park) and
Ashton Smith (Scarborough, ON/West Hill Collegiate) both dished out seven assists.
Rashaad Sneed led Holy Family (2-8) with 16 points followed by Sam Mushman with 12 and Smith and Alberto Munoz with 10. Both teams were hot from the field, with the Crimson Hawks shooting 54.5 percent overall and 60 percent from 3-point distance and the Tigers making 56.3 percent of their attempts.
Sanders nearly eclipsed his previous career scoring high of 23 in the first half alone when he made all six of his 3-point tries to match a career best he set earlier this season vs. Lake Erie. The junior guard increased his career 3-point total to 187 to move into a tie for third in school history with Aaron Faulkner.
Ironically, his 3-point explosion came with former IUP player and current Bloomsburg head coach John Sanow scouting from the stands in advance of his team's game vs. the Crimson Hawks on Jan. 3. Sanow and Geoff Evans share the school record for most 3-pointers in a game with eight.
Souberbielle hit 7 of 8 from the field, including all three of his 3-point attempts, and added two assists and a steal. His previous career best was nine vs. West Virginia Wesleyan and his 21 points were exactly half of the total of 42 he had in the first seven games of the season combined.
IUP is off for the holiday break and returns to action with a pair of PSAC crossover games after New Year's. After visiting Bloomsburg the Crimson Hawks are at Mansfield the following day. IUP does not return to Memorial Field House until Jan. 8 and 9 with games vs. PSAC East opponents East Stroudsburg and Kutztown.
