IUP swimmers set three school records, earned three new NCAA B cuts and lowered times in three others and gained eight new qualifiers for the PSAC meet on the first day of the Zippy Invitational hosted by Akron.

Jackie Hynson (King George, VA/King George) made her fifth B cut and broke the school record in the 100 backstroke with a time of 57.33 in the lead leg of the 400 medley relay. She teamed with Allyson Mitidieri (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West), Ashley McAteer (Irwin/Penn-Trafford) and Katie Lehman (Cary, NC/Green Hope) to post a B cut time of 3:54.69 in the event to break a 10-year-old school mark by almost four seconds.

Hynson also improved her national standing in the 200 fly with a time of 2:03.79 in a time trial. Mitidieri joined Hynson with an individual school record, swimming a time of 2:08.53 in the 200 IM to lower her national qualifying time. The previous IUP record of 2:10.83 by Kim Berghoff had stood since 1993.

McAteer recorded a time of 23.72 in the prelims of the 50 freestyle and moved into the top five in the nation in the event. She then swam a 23.78 in the finals to finish fourth.

Two other IUP women made B cut times for the first time this season, both in the 500 freestyle, with Lauren Alshouse (Lancaster/Conestoga Valley) posting a time of 5:07.50 and Christina Janosky (Dover, Pa. /Dover ) touching in 5:08.62. Kelsey Smith (Columbia, MD/Long Reach) (500 freestyle), Nikki Newman (Meadville/Meadville) (50 freestyle) and Stephanie Soracco (Ingram/PA Cyber) (200 IM) became new qualifiers for the PSAC meet.

Doug McWhorter (Charlottesville, VA/Broadneck) topped the Crimson Hawk men with a sixth-place finish in the 50 freestyle in 21.36. Five swimmers also earned berths in the PSAC meet, including Anthony Termin (Enola/Cumberland Valley), Kyle Ford (Fairfax, VA/Chantilly) and Conrad Kubaney (Erie/Mercyhurst Prep) (500 freestyle), Josh Huger (King George, Va./King George) (50 freestyle) and Dustin Steider (Cochranton/Meadville) (200 IM).
