Jackie Hynson, Allyson Mitidieri, Rudy da Costa Star on Day 2 of Zippy Invitational

Rudy da Costa earned a B cut in the 400 IM

Saturday Results and Team Scores

Jackie Hynson (King George, VA/King George) set a meet record and broke an IUP school mark in the 400 IM, Allyson Mitidieri (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) continued her strong freshman season with impressive swims in that event as well as the 100 breaststroke and Rudy da Costa (Durbin, South Africa/Westville) earned an NCAA B cut on the second day of the Zippy Invitational.

Hynson posted a time of 4:25.93 in the prelims of the 400 IM to break the meet and school records, although her time was lowered by event winner Merm McGeath of Duquesne in the finals. Hynson finished second with a swim of 4:26.83 in the finals.

Her prelim time lowered her national ranking in the event and left her just 2.54 seconds shy of the A cut time. The previous school record was held by Julie Bober for 10 years, and Hynson shattered the mark by more than eight seconds. Including her performance in the 100 backstroke Friday, Hynson now holds five school individual records in just over one season at IUP.

Mitidieri posted her second school record of the meeting with a time of 1:05.65 in the prelims of the 100 breaststroke before finishing fourth during the evening session. She bettered her national standing in that event as well as the 400 IM, with her fifth-place time of 4:30.82 also fast enough to break the school record if not for Hynson's showing.

Mitidieri did set a freshman record in the 400 IM and bettered her national standing in both of her events Saturday.

Rudy da Costa (Durbin, South Africa/Westville) became the first IUP men's swimmer this season to earn a B cut with his time of 4:09.17 in the prelims of the 400 IM. He went on to finish sixth with a time of 4:11.97 in the finals while Dylan Mudlo (Kittanning, Pa./Kittanning) joined him in the championships finals and placed eighth in 4:13.56. Steve Long (Greensburg/Hempfield) joined da Costa as a B qualifier with his time of 51.41 in the 100 butterfly.

The women's 800 freestyle relay team also gained a B cut with the team of Hynson, Christina Janosky (Dover, Pa. /Dover ), Lauren Alshouse (Lancaster/Conestoga Valley) and Ashley McAteer (Irwin/Penn-Trafford) finishing second in 7:41.35, just missing another school record. The men's 800 freestyle relay squad of Mudlo, Walter Smith (Annandale, VA/Annandale), Anthony Termin (Enola/Cumberland Valley) and Luke Shaheen (Annville, Pa./Annville-Cleona) was fourth in 7:00.19.

The three-day invitational concludes with competition in the 100 and 1650 freestyle, 200 backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly and the 400 freestyle relay.
