Darryl Webb (Elkridge, Md./Long Reach) posted his third straight double-double with 28 points and 12 rebounds to lead IUP to its fifth consecutive win, a 77-58 victory over California Wednesday at Hamer Hall.
Ashton Smith (Scarborough, ON/West Hill Collegiate) added 13 points and four assists and
Julian Sanders (Medford, NJ/Shawnee) finished with 11 to give the Crimson Hawks three players in double figures. IUP improved to 12-3 overall and are undefeated through three PSAC West games, tied with Mercyhurst atop the division standings.
The Crimson Hawks have won nine straight PSAC West games since losing at Clarion on February 7, 2010 and are 26-5 in division play over the past three seasons.
Webb, who has 46 double-doubles in his career, increased his career point total to 1,672 and is only 44 away from breaking Robert Misenko's school record. Webb already has the career rebounding record and finished the night with 1,047.
The senior All-American is averaging 24.0 points and 12.7 rebounds over the past three games and is the reigning PSAC West Player of the Week.
Steve Swiech led the Vulcans (8-6, 1-2) with 13 points and Rashawd Hatten and Chad Tipton both scored 11. California led by as many as six in the first half before IUP went on a 19-7 run, including a jumper by Smith at the buzzer, to take a 33-27 lead into the locker room.
The Crimson Hawks, who have won five in a row against their longtime rival, broke the game open with a 9-0 run midway through the second half, including 3-pointers by Sanders and Webb and a three-point play by
Scooter Renkin (Midlothian, VA/Blue Ridge), to take a 51-35 lead with 11:07 left in the game.
The margin reached 20 for the first time at 62-42 on a free throw by Smith at the 6:53 mark, and the Crimson Hawks led by as many as 23 on two occasions.
Webb dominated over the final 20 minutes after struggling through a 1 for 7 shooting effort in the first half. He hit 8 of 11 from the field and all four of his free throws to score 21 second half points to help the Crimson Hawks pull away.
IUP bounced back from making only 10 of 26 shots in the first half to hit 56.5 percent after the break while also finishing with a 36-35 edge on the boards after being dominated on the glass in the first half. The Crimson Hawks have only been outrebounded in one game this season.
IUP returns home Saturday to face Clarion in a 7:30 contest before embarking on a four-game road swing beginning next Wednesday at Edinboro.
