Marcel Souberbielle (Montevideo, Uruguay/Uruguayan American School)'s layup with :04.2 left put the Crimson Hawks up by one, propelling IUP to a 65-64 win over East Stroudsburg in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) men's basketball crossover matchup on Friday night at Koehler Fieldhouse.
Souberbielle's putback came after a missed jumper by
Ashton Smith (Scarborough, ON/West Hill Collegiate) with seven seconds remaining, and before a missed three by Russell Graham III in the final second which would have given ESU the victory.
IUP (6-1, 4-1) held a seven-point lead with 4:50 left before a jumper and one by Graham cut the Warriors deficit to 60-56 just 20 seconds later. After a Crimson Hawks turnover, Gerald Bridges knocked down a three to put ESU down one, before another turnover gave the Warriors the ball back, as Matt Tobin's layup at 3:53 gave them a 61-60 lead.
After yet another turnover by the Crimson Hawks, the Warriors got the chance to go on top by three, but another layup by Johnson was swatted by
Josh Wiegand (Whiteford, MD/John Carroll), which led to a three-pointer by Smith as the Crimson Hawks took back the lead, 63-61 with 2:32 remaining.
The Warriors (5-5, 2-3) went back on top again, getting yet another three by Bridges after a turnover by IUP, taking a 64-63 lead with 1:19 left. The Crimson Hawks had a chance to get back on top on their very next possession, but a missed a pair of free throws gave the ball back to ESU with 49 seconds left.
Graham's layup with 20 seconds left bounced out, as
Julian Sanders (Medford, NJ/Shawnee) grabbed the rebound, setting up the final game-winning play for the Crimson Hawks.
The Warriors owned the lead for most of the first half, but IUP rallied to take a two-point lead on a three-pointer by Sanders with 42 seconds left, later extending it to a 31-27 advantage with a pair of free throws by
Devante Chance (Philadelphia, Pa. /Electrical & Technology Charter), as the Crimson Hawks took a four-point lead into the half.
Graham scored 17 points to lead the Warriors, adding eight assists in 39 minutes. Bridges and Whis Grant also reached double-figures, scoring 13 and 11 points, respectively.
Smith finished with a game-high 22 points, hitting 8-of-15 from the floor and 5-of-7 from the foul line. Chance came off the bench to score 12 points, connecting on 7-of-8 from the charity stripe in 22 minutes. Sanders was the only other IUP player to reach double-figures, scoring 10 and grabbing seven boards.
The Crimson Hawks turned the ball over twice as much as ESU, 20-10, but outshot the Warriors 47.7 percent to 37.7 percent.
The Crimson Hawks travel south to face Kutztown on Saturday.
