IUP Softball Team Splits a Pair with Minnesota State and Saginaw Valley State

The Crimson Hawks continued their spring trip with a split against a pair of nationally ranked opponents. IUP picked up a 4-3 win over No. 23 Minnesota State and dropped a 1-0 decision to No. 25 Saginaw Valley.

Against Minnesota State the Crimson Hawks entered the top of the seventh locked in 3-3 tie. With two outs Monica Iachini (Claysburg/Claysburg-Kimmel) singled. Megan McCormick (Evans City/Seneca Valley) singled to right and after a wild throw from the right fielder Iachini raced around to score the eventual game-winning run.

Mary Ward (Hatfield/North Penn) put IUP up 3-2 in the sixth inning with a solo homerun the first of her career. Kristen Tunno (Seaford, Va./Grafton) added a pair of hits and drove in the first two IUP runs on single in the third inning.

Kelly King (Nazareth/Bethlehem Catholic) picked up the win in the circle for the Crimson Hawks pitching seven innings scattering eight hits, striking out three and walking four.

The game with Saginaw Valley was a pitcher's duel. Erin Holloway (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton) turned in pitched seven innings gave up just one run on eight hits struck out eight leaving her just two shy of 800 career strikeouts.

Saginaw scored the only run of the game in the top of the first. The Cardinals strung together three straight hits before three strikeouts left a pair stranded, but the one was the only run that Jade Fulton would need.

The Crimson Hawks continue their spring trip with a double header on Thursday against Southwest Minnesota State at 9:00 a.m. and Concordia-St. Paul at 11:00 a.m.
