Ashley McAteer (Irwin/Penn-Trafford) and
Jackie Hynson (King George, VA/King George) both qualified for the consolation finals and earned honorable mention All-America honors in their respective events on the opening day of the NCAA Division II swim meet in San Antonio, Texas.
McAteer posted a time of 23.50 to finish 13th in the 50 freestyle while Hynson broke a school record in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:05.72 to also finish 13th.
The school record is the sixth in individual events for Hynson, who still has three more events remaining at nationals. She broke the record in the 200 IM set by teammate
Allyson Mitidieri (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) earlier this season by more than a full second.
A year ago, Hynson finished third at the NCAA meet in the 200 butterfly and 200 backstroke. She will compete in those two events as well as the 400 IM over the next three days.
McAteer missed breaking the school record she shares with Petra Adamkova in the 50 freestyle by just .01. McAteer qualified for the evening session a year after making the trip to nationals as a freshman but failing to advance. She will also compete in the 100 freestyle on Saturday.
