IUP wrapped up its 2011 regular season with a doubleheader loss to California by scores of 4-1 and 6-3 Saturday at CONSOL Energy Park in Washington.

The sweep means the Crimson Hawks will finish fourth in the PSAC West with an 11-13 record. That gives IUP (19-27 overall) a first round PSAC tournament game against Millersville (37-8), which won the PSAC East and is ranked No. 1 in the Atlantic Region.

The conference tournament takes place May 11-14 at Point Stadium in Johnstown. This is the third time in the past four years IUP has qualified for the playoffs. California is 28-16 and 13-10 in the PSAC West and finished in third place.

Saturday also marked the final regular season games for six IUP seniors, a group that has combined to post a cumulative grade point average of 3.26 during their college careers.

IUP's senior class, with majors in parentheses, includes Kyle Heane (McClure, Pa./Indian Valley) (criminology), Mitch Perez (Eldersburg, Md./Mount St. Joseph) (marketing), Vern Powell (Tabernacle, N.J./Seneca) (sports administration), Jake Shaffer (criminology), Frank Sirolli (Cinnaminson, N.J./Cinnaminson) (sports administration) and Andrew Welch (DuBois, Pa./DuBois Central Catholic) (accounting).

In the first game against California, Randy Sturgill held IUP to five hits and struck out nine in a complete game. Brett Quiggle (Weedville/St. Marys) had two hits for the Crimson Hawks, including a two-out double in the seventh which was followed by an RBI single by Welch that avoided the shutout.

Pat Bradley (Pittsburgh/North Allegheny) started on the hill for IUP and surrendered only two hits and one earned run in 4 1-3 innings before the Vulcans put up four runs against the bullpen.

The Crimson Hawks fell behind 6-0 after four innings of the second game before battling back with three runs in the fifth. Sirolli and Mike Lupia (Middletown/Middletown) drove in runs with singles and another run came across on an error to cut the IUP deficit in half.

But with the bases loaded and one out, Jim Kinker came in to pitch and struck out the final two batters of the inning to keep California in front. Kinker struck out five and allowed only one hit in 2 2-3 innings of shutout relief.

Robbie Zinsmeister (Hatfield/North Penn) had three of IUP's eight hits.
