Leander Toney had a top mark of 7 feet, 1 inch to finish third in the high jump and break one of the oldest records in IUP history at the NCAA track and field championships Friday in Turlock, Calif.
Toney actually tied Christopher Copeland of St. Augustine's for the second-highest performance of the competition but placed third on the basis of more misses. His jump broke the IUP outdoor record of 7-0 held by Stan Shockley since 1976, and Toney also holds the school indoor record in the event at 7-0 1/2.
Oliver Harsanyi of Western State won the national title, clearing the bar at 7-2 1/4.
Toney finished second at the indoor meet in March, missing out on the national championship on misses. He was also fourth at both the 2010 indoor and outdoor meets.
Brianna Liebold was also in action Friday but could not duplicate her All-America showing in the long jump when she finished eighth. She took 10th in the triple jump with a mark of 39-4 1/2.
