AT A GLANCE
With first place in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West wrapped up, the Crimson Hawks will look to stay sharp this Wednesday when they travel to Lock Haven. Winless in 2011-12, The Bald Eagles are hoping to halt IUP's momentum and capture their elusive first victory.
LAST TIME OUT
Marcel Souberbielle (Montevideo, Uruguay/Uruguayan American School)'s go-ahead three-pointer with just 31 seconds left sealed a thrilling 66-63 win for the Crimson Hawks over PSAC West rival Slippery rock Saturday night.
Ashton Smith (Scarborough, ON/West Hill Collegiate) also tallied a game-high 23 points, eight rebounds and four assists.
The Rock charged back from a nine point deficit at the half to knot the game at 61-61 with 1:01 to play in the second half, but on the next possession
Anthony Wells (Cleveland, OH/Shaker Heights) found Souberbielle wide open at the top of the arc. Souberbielle drilled the trey without hesitation and sent the crowd of over 3,000 at the Kovalchick Complex into a frenzy.
Souberbielle finished with 13 points and three rebounds, while Sanders chipped in 13 points, four boards and two steals. Smith was 7-15 from the floor and a perfect 8-of-8 from the foul line for his game-high 23.
ALL SEALED UP
With their win over Slippery Rock and a loss by Mercyhurst, The Crimson Hawks locked up first place in the PSAC West heading into the final week of the regular season. Cal currently sits in fourth place in the West, but Clarion and Gannon still have outside shots at the playoffs.
NCAA ATLANTIC REGION RANKINGS
The first NCAA Atlantic Regional rankings were released last Wednesday as IUP lands just outside the top five in 6th. West Liberty (WV), Shaw (NC), Charleston (WV), Alderson-Braoddus (WV) and Bowie State (MD) make up the top five. The top eight teams in the region advance to the NCAA tournament with the PSAC, WVIAC and CIAA champions earning automatic berths.
NATIONAL POLLS
The Crimson Hawks jumped up to 13th in the latest National Association of Basketball Coaches/Division II Men's Basketball Poll. IUP bumped up four spots from 17th after sweeping a pair of PSAC West games last week. West Liberty (WV) moves into the top spot in the polls for the first time week.
