No. 29 Women's Tennis Takes Down No. 27 Concordia on the Road

BRONXVILLE, NY - Emilia Osborne (Leighton Buzzard, United Kingdom/Cedars ) clinched a Crimson Hawks victory with a 6-4, 6-1 win at fifth singles and paired with Tanya Timko (Cannonsburg, PA/Chartiers-Houston) for an 8-5 win at second doubles as 29th-ranked IUP defeated No. 27 Concordia in non-conference women's tennis action on Sunday afternoon at the Meyers Tennis Center in New York.

The Crimson Hawks victory brought an end to the 10-match winning streak for Concordia, which drops to 10-1 while IUP is now 8-5 on the year.

The win at number two doubles for Osborne and Timko came over Concordia's Juliana Frey and Ana Mendes while the clinching win for Osborne was over Maria Ortiz.

In other doubles action, Erika Schnaas (Mexico City, Mexico/Escuela Nacional Preparatoria ) and Ranvita Mahto (Burlington, ON/Robert Bateman) scored a win at number three over Maria Ortiz and Camilla Xavier, 8-1. Tabtip Louhabanjong (Krabi, Thailand/West Anchorage (AK)) and Katie Eaton (Halesowen, United Kingdom/Haybridge) got nipped by the East's third-ranked team of Yuliya Plevako and Clara Catanzano 8-5.

In singles action, Timko took the first point to make it a 3-1 match with a 6-1, 6-1 win at number two over Mendes. Schnaas followed right after with a win of her own at number six, easily defeating Xavier 6-0, 6-1. Osborne's victory at four sealed it before Eaton won 6-2, 6-3 over Catanzano at number three.

Louhabanjong then fell to Plevako at number one in three sets, 5-7, 7-6 (7-5), 10-5 before the match finished as Abby McCormick (Bethel Park, Pa. /Bethel Park) lost to Frey 6-4, 0-6, 10-3. Plevako is also ranked third regionally in singles play.

The victory was also the 50th for head coach Larry Peterson, who reaches the win total in his fourth season at IUP.

This is the first of three straight days with a match for the Crimson Hawks, who play Division I Monmouth on Monday and return home to host Mercyhurst in its PSAC West opener on Tuesday.
