INDIANA, PA – Kelly King (Nazareth/Bethlehem Catholic) tossed her second no-hitter of the season Sunday as the IUP softball team cruised to a pair of 8-0 wins over Mansfield in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Central action. King walked just one batter in the six inning no-no, and scattered just five hits in a shutout performance in game two.

King steamrolled through the Mansfield lineup in game one, retiring the first 15 batters in order before allowing a walk in the top half of the sixth. She was in a groove all afternoon, adding seven strikeouts in the outing.

The IUP offense was equally as impressive in game one, posting three runs in the second inning when Meghan Carney (Corry/Corry) singled to score Ashley Strack (Johnstown/Westmont Hilltop) and Megan McCormick (Evans City/Seneca Valley) singled to plate Carney and Jen Beaver (Chester Springs/Owen J. Roberts).

The Crimson Hawks would explode for four more runs in the fifth when Carney knocked in two more runs with a single. Marissa Leslie (Claysburg/Claysburg-Kimmel) would continue the offensive surge when she smacked a tripled to center field that scored Carney and Beaver.

Needing a run in the sixth to secure the no-hitter for King, McCormick delivered when she drilled a home run over the center field wall to wrap up the 8-0 victory.

King continued to baffle opposing hitters in game two, keeping the Mountaineers off the bags until the third inning, when Jordan Rishel finally broke through with a single. King would allow another hit on the very next batter, but would work out of the jam and keep Mansfield off the scoreboard.

Leading 1-0 after a Tara Waldo (Pittsburgh/Baldwin) RBI double in the first inning, the Crimson Hawks would tally three more runs in the third when Jasa Mitchell (Snow Shoe/Bald Eagle Area) nailed a two-run double to center and Waldo laced a single down the left field line to score Mitchell.

Mitchell would come through yet again in the fourth when she doubled to score McCormick, who had knocked in Beaver and Iachini with a single just one at-bat earlier. Mitchell would later seal the six inning win when she reached on an error that plated Katie Iyoob (Jessup/Valley View).

Mitchell was 2-of-4 in game two with three RBI, while Iachini was 3-for-3 with three runs scored. McCormick and Carney were both 2-for-3 with three RBI in game one.

With the sweep, IUP improves to 16-8-1, 3-1 on the season. The Crimson Hawks are back in action this Tuesday when they travel to Bloomsburg for a battle of PSAC Central title contenders. First pitch in game one is set for 2:30 p.m.
