KUTZTOWN, PA –
Marcel Souberbielle (Montevideo, Uruguay/Uruguayan American School) scored a career-high 23 points to help 16th-ranked IUP to a 70-62 win at Kutztown in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) men's basketball action on Saturday night at Keystone Arena.
Souberbielle shot 8-of-12 from the floor, connecting on 4-of-5 of his shots beyond the three-point arc to lead the Crimson Hawks in scoring and help them rebound from the Friday night loss to East Stroudsburg. He added six rebounds and went 3-of-4 from the foul line in 36 minutes.
IUP improves to 9-2 on the season and 5-2 in PSAC play while Kutztown falls to 3-10 and 2-5.
After playing back-and-forth ball early in the first half, the Crimson Hawks went on a 10-0 run to take a 22-15 lead with 7:34 to go. Three times Kutztown cut its deficit to two points before IUP scored seven of the half's final nine points to take a 33-26 lead into the break.
A three-pointer by Souberbielle early in the second half gave IUP an eight-point lead at 36-28 but the Golden Bears continued to try and chip away at the lead, getting it down to a three-point game at 44-41 with 12:27 left on the clock.
The Crimson Hawks were quick to rebound, capitalizing on Kutztown turnovers and missed shots to score eight straight points and open up a 52-41 lead with 10:15 to go. Souberbielle,

Scooter Renkin (Midlothian, VA/Blue Ridge) and
Dan Ayebo (Indiana/Indiana) all scored baskets for IUP on the game-breaking run.
The Golden Bears cut it to a seven-point game at 58-51 at the 6:30 mark but
Anthony Wells (Cleveland, OH/Shaker Heights) answered with a three-pointer and a tip-in later by
Mathis Keita (Thionville, France/Insep) gave IUP a 65-52 lead with under four minutes left to play. The closest Kutztown would get the rest of the way was six points with 15 seconds left as the Crimson Hawks went on to the eight-point win.
Kutztown had four players reach double-figures in scoring, including Abdul King who had a team-high 20 points. Ryan Connolly added 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Renkin was the only other IUP player to reach double-figures, scoring 13 points while adding six assists, five rebounds and three steals. Chance had nine points while Keita had six points, five boards and a pair of blocks.
The Crimson Hawks are back in action next weekend with home games against Shippensburg on January 11 and Millersville on January 12. Tipoff for both contests is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
