INDIANA, PA –
Casey McGowan (Chalfont, Pa./Central Bucks South) scored her first career hat trick to help lead IUP to a 3-2 victory over Slippery Rock in field hockey action on Wednesday night at Miller Stadium.
McGowan's goals came consecutively in the game, giving the Crimson Hawks – now 3-6 on the season – a 3-1 lead midway through the second half.
Slippery Rock got the scoring going when Lindsay Brown slipped one in from the left wing in the 27th minute. McGowan came back less than four minutes later, scoring off a deflection in the lower left corner of the cage to knot the score in the 31st minute.
10 minutes into the second half McGowan scored her second, also from the left wing on a pass from
Chelsea Wanamaker (Oley, Pa./Oley Valley). It didn't take long for McGowan to post her hat trick, knocking another one in from the left wing on an assist from Wanamaker less than four minutes later.
In the 62nd minute Slippery Rock's Brown scored on a breakaway, narrowing the deficit to one.
The Crimson Hawks were able to play keep away in the final eight minutes, limiting The Rock offensively to seal the win.
IUP held a 16-4 advantage in shots on the night and had 17 penalty corners compared to Slippery Rock's four.
This was the second time this season an IUP player scored at least three goals in a game, as Jessica Kida tallied four in the 18-1 win over Newberry.
It was the second straight win for the Crimson Hawks, who host top-ranked Shippensburg on Saturday night at Miller Stadium.
