UPDATE
BUCKHANNON, WV - Led by
Mathis Keita (Thionville, France/Insep)'s career-high 30 points, the Crimson Hawks opened up the 2013-14 regular season with a 79-62 victory against West Virginia Wesleyan Wednesday night.
IUP held the lead the entire game, shutting down the Bobcats and putting on an offensive show. In addition to Keita, three other Crimson Hawks finished the game with double-digit points;
Marcel Souberbielle (Montevideo, Uruguay/Uruguayan American School) with 14,
Devante Chance (Philadelphia, Pa. /Electrical & Technology Charter) with 12 and
Jeremy Jeffers (Wilson, N.C./Greenfield School) with 10.
The Crimson Hawks dominated from the start, going on a 14-0 run to open up play. A layup from TJ Thompson would be the first points the Bobcats saw in the game, coming after nearly seven minutes of play.
Over the next ten minutes of play, the two teams played tight basketball with IUP going on a 20-12 run. But the Crimson Hawks would pull away and headed into the half leading 43-24.
Keita picked up right where he left off in the first half, opening up the second period of play with a jumper to give IUP a 21-point lead. A three-pointer from
Jesse Bosnik (St. Marys/Elk County Catholic) with just under ten minutes to play would give the Crimson Hawks the 66-42 advantage, their biggest lead of the game.
The Bobcats struggled to fight back, calling on 11 different players to spark the team, but their efforts would fall short as IUP claimed the victory.
Keita finished with 30 points in 35 minutes, shooting 12-17 from the field and grabbing six boards. He also added five assists and two steals.
Leading the way in rebounding for the Crimson Hawks was Souberbielle, Jeffers and
Devon Cottrell (Pittsburgh, Pa. /Gateway) who each added seven rebounds. Increasing his assist streak to 37, Chance lent a hand five times and also added three rebounds.
The Crimson Hawks will open up the home portion of their schedule, hosting the Falcons of Notre Dame in a 7:30 p.m. matchup at the Kovalchick Complex on Saturday.
