No. 14 IUP Claims First Home Victory with 87-70 Win Over Notre Dame (Ohio)

INDIANA, PA – With four players recording double-digit points, the IUP men's basketball team claimed its second consecutive win, defeating Notre Dame (Ohio) 87-70 at the Kovalchick Complex Saturday night.

Led by Mathis Keita (Thionville, France/Insep)'s 25 points, the Crimson Hawks put on an offensive show for the home crowd. Marcel Souberbielle (Montevideo, Uruguay/Uruguayan American School) finished just two points shy of a career-high, registering 21 points. Devante Chance (Philadelphia, Pa. /Electrical & Technology Charter) finished the game with 15 and Devon Cottrell (Pittsburgh, Pa. /Gateway) added 14.

This was the second consecutive game in which four Crimson Hawks finished in double-figures.

Notre Dame stayed with IUP early on, sticking within two points of the Crimson Hawks' lead. Chance and Keita would hit back-to-back three-pointers to send IUP on a 13-4 run and take an eight-point lead.

The game was up and down the court for the next seven minutes as the two teams exchanged baskets. The Falcons got within six after two free throws from Jarvis Huntley, but it would be all IUP after that.

The Crimson Hawks capitalized off of free throws from Souberbielle and Cornell Yarde II (Reading, Pa. /Schuylkill Valley) to take the 15-point advantage. The team would lead by as much as 20 in the first half back-to-back scores from Keita and headed into the break leading the Falcons 49-32.

IUP kept up the pressure in the second half, only allowing Notre Dame within 14 points of its lead. The Crimson Hawks got up by as much as 23 points after a layup from Cottrell with 9:29 remaining in the game.

A made free throw from newcomer Jesse Bosnik (St. Marys/Elk County Catholic) would seal the deal for the Crimson Hawks, giving them the 87-70 victory.

As a team, IUP shot an outstanding 55.9 percent (33-of-59) from the field and 50.0 percent (10-of-20) from three-point range.

Cottrell led the way for the Crimson Hawks defensively, grabbing nine boards. Souberbielle finished with seven, followed by Jeffers with six. Keita and Chance each added six assists.

It was another outstanding night for Keita, as he shot 10-of-15 from the field and 4-of-6 from free throw range. He added five rebounds, six assists, two blocks and three steals. Not to be outdone, Souberbielle shot 7-of-12 from the field, 2-of-4 from three-point range and 5-of-6 from the line. He added seven rebounds, two assists and a steal.

In his first game at the Kovalchick Complex as a Crimson Hawk, Jeffers shot 3-of-7 from the floor, 1-of-1 from three-point range and added six rebounds and three assists in 27 minutes.

Chance and Cottrell both went 6-of-7 from the field with Chance adding six assists, one block and a steal.

IUP continues their homestand, playing host to Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference newcomer Pitt-Johnstown Wednesday. The Crimson Hawks hold the 31-16 series advantage over the Mountain Cats. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
