INDIANA, PA -- IUP finished the season strong, winning five of their last six games, and today was no different as
Chelsea Wanamaker (Oley, Pa./Oley Valley) scored the lone goal to lead the Crimson Hawks to a 1-0 victory over second-ranked Millersville. The win clinched a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) postseason berth for IUP on Senior Day.
Millersville came out strong, but IUP goalkeeper
Darian Shuker (Reading, Pa./Exeter ) never faltered throughout the entire contest. In the first 20 minutes of play, the Marauders produced three shots and four penalty corners, but none were able to find the net.
The only goal of the game came off of IUP's first shot. In the 21st minute, Wanamaker shot from 12 yards out and buried the ball in the bottom-left corner of the cage. The goal put IUP up 1-0, and the defense took over after that.
Millersville's offense continued to find opportunities throughout the game. In total they produced 11 penalty corners and outshot the Crimson Hawks seven to four, but IUP found enough fortune in their few opportunities to pull off the win.
Millersville had a few chances to pull close in the waning minutes. They had two penalty corners and two shots in the last three minutes of play, but Shuker held strong and stopped both shots.
The Crimson Hawks clinched either the fifth or sixth seed in next week's PSAC championships depending on other results from today's conference action. IUP will head into the postseason with an overall record of 8-10 and a 5-5 mark in the conference. The tournament will begin on Nov. 5 with opponents and additional details will be announced at a later time.
