No. 14 Men’s Basketball Falls to La Salle in Exhibition

PHILADELPHIA – Marcel Souberbielle (Montevideo, Uruguay/Uruguayan American School) scored a team-high 17 points as 10th-ranked IUP fell to Division I La Salle 87-57 in men's basketball exhibition action on Saturday afternoon.

Souberbielle shot 7-of-13 from the floor and added three rebounds in 35 minutes.

The Crimson Hawks were outscored 50-28 in the first half, but did hold a 6-4 lead early in the contest. The Explorers built a 20-point lead towards the end of the half by a jumper by Devante Chance (Philadelphia, Pa. /Electrical & Technology Charter), a three-pointer by Jeremy Jeffers (Wilson, N.C./Greenfield School) and a free throw from Cornell Yarde III cut La Salle's lead to 42-28 with 1:47 to play.

La Salle led by as many as 41 points in the second half at 76-35, but the Crimson Hawks finished strong with a 22-11 run to end the game.

Chance finished with 14 points for the Crimson Hawks, going 6-of-12 from the floor, including 2-of-5 from three-point range. He also had five assists.

Mathis Keita (Thionville, France/Insep) finished with just five points on 2-of-16 shooting, but had nine rebounds, four assists and two steals. Devon Cottrell (Pittsburgh, Pa. /Gateway) had eight points on 3-of-5 from the field with five boards while Jeffers finished with seven points and four rebounds.

IUP finished 23-of-66 from the field (34.8 percent), including 4-of-22 from three-point range (18.2 percent). The Crimson Hawks also went 7-of-10 from the free throw line and had just nine turnovers.

The Crimson Hawks will finish their exhibition schedule on Monday when they travel to Michigan State to battle the second-ranked Spartans. Tipoff on Monday is set for 7 p.m.
