AT A GLANCE
The Crimson Hawks play host to Shaw in their first game action of the Indiana Regional Medical Center Classic. This is the second matchup between these two teams, with the Bears holding the 1-0 series advantage. The last meeting came in the NCAA Regional Quarterfinals in 2012 as the Bears knocked IUP out of the tournament with a 62-54 win. Shaw comes in having lost three straight games, with a 1-3 overall record. The Crimson Hawks are riding a four-game win streak to open the season.
MOVIN' ON UP
Starting out the season in the 14th spot, the Crimson Hawks have climbed up the National Association of Basketball Coaches Division II poll to No. 10. IUP is one of only two Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference schools in the top 25, receiving 257 points. They moved up one spot from last week's No. 11 ranking.
FRESHMAN KING
After posting career numbers in last week's wins over Pitt-Johnstown and Clarion,
R-Fr. G Cornell Yarde II (Reading, Pa. /Schuylkill Valley) earned PSAC West Freshman of the Week honors. Yarde is leading all IUP bench players, averaging 22.0 minutes per game, 3.8 points per game, 3.0 rebounds per game and 1.8 assists per game. The IUP bench has scored just 13 points in its last two competitions, with Yarde scoring 11 of those.
MY OFFENSE IS BETTER THAN YOURS
The Crimson Hawks posting huge offensive numbers to open up the season. In their first four competitions, they are outscoring opponents by an average of 17.25 points per game, scoring 310 points compared to just 241 put up by their opposition. Four Crimson Hawks are averaging double-digit scoring numbers with
Sr. G Mathis Ketia averaging 23.0 points per game,
Sr. F Marcel Souberbielle (Montevideo, Uruguay/Uruguayan American School) averaging 18.3 points per game and
Jr G. Devante Chance (Philadelphia, Pa. /Electrical & Technology Charter) averaging 12.5 points per game. The team is shooting .478 (110-of-230) from the field and .405 (30-of-74) from behind the arc.
HOME TOURNEY
IUP is 5-1 in the IRMC Classic play over the last three years, with the only loss coming to West Virginia Wesleyan. The annual tournament has been kind to the Crimson Hawks, as they've outscored opponents by an average of 8.0 points per game, putting up 70+ points in three of six victories.
