No. 10 Crimson Hawks Hold off Late Shaw Rally for win on First Day of IRMC Classic

INDIANA, PA – Four players scored in double-figures to help the 10th-ranked IUP men's basketball team to a 74-57 win over Shaw on the first day of the IRMC Classic on Saturday at the Kovalchick Complex.

Marcel Souberbielle (Montevideo, Uruguay/Uruguayan American School) scored a game-high 20 points as the Crimson Hawks extended their win streak to start the season and are now 5-0.

Also reaching double-figures for IUP was Devante Chance (Philadelphia, Pa. /Electrical & Technology Charter), who scored 16 points and dished out seven assists. Jeremy Jeffers (Wilson, N.C./Greenfield School) scored a season-high 14 points and grabbed seven rebounds while Mathis Keita (Thionville, France/Insep) scored 12 points and also had seven boards in 40 minutes of action.

The Crimson Hawks started the game hot, scoring the first 15 points, capped off by back-to-back three-pointers by Souberbielle. IUP kept the lead between 12 and 14 points through most of the first half and led by as many as 17 points at 30-13 with just under five minutes to go before the break.

Shaw (1-4) cut its deficit to under double-digits right before the half with a 6-2 run as the Crimson Hawks took a 34-25 lead into the locker room.

The Crimson Hawks got their lead back to 12 early in the second half after a pair of free throws by Jeremy Jeffers (Wilson, N.C./Greenfield School), but Shaw rattled off nine straight points during a 1:42 span to make it a 42-39 game with 14:02 to play. IUP responded with a 12-2 run, which included three-pointers by Chance and Keita, to go on top by 13 at 54-41.

On three occasions Shaw cut its deficit to nine points, but back-to-back three-pointers by Chance and Jesse Bosnik (St. Marys/Elk County Catholic) jumpstarted a 10-2 run that eventually led to a 17-point victory.

The Crimson Hawks outshot Shaw 45.5 percent (25-of-55) to 36.5 percent (19-of-52). IUP also finished 10-of-26 from three-point range and held a slim edge in rebounds, 36-35.

In the opening game of the IRMC Classic on Saturday, The University of the Sciences defeated Pitt-Johnstown 74-68.

The Crimson Hawks are back in action on Sunday when they face The Sciences in the final game of the IRMC Classic. Tipoff is scheduled for 3 p.m., directly following the 1 p.m. tip between Pitt-Johnstown and Shaw.
